The Village shop - Harpenden
« on: Monday 26 May 08 22:24 BST (UK) »

My Gt Gt Aunt Johan Magdalen Brash ran the village shop in Harpenden up to about 1891 (census)    Her Mother had run the shop before that since about 1861..

My query is that would it be possible to find out approximately when Johan

gave up the shop, as I found her in Glasgow on the 1901 census.  I also

know that she died in Glasgow.. Would there be any records anywhere that

would show a change of hands of the business.. I am trying to establish

exactly when she went to Scotland that could maybe tie in with the mystery

disappearance of her brother and his family , who I believe did a moonlight

flit to Wales around that time.. Any comments deeply appreciated

She was still in Harpendon in 1895 acc to Kellys Directory as  Miss Joan M Brash, grocer. She seems to be the only Brash noted.

Hi Sallly,  many thank's for this.. I last found Johan on 1901 census in Glasgow,  I had found her in Harpenden  1891, so this has narrowed it down from about 1895 to 1900  that she left the village.  Another kind Rootschatter has found her death in 1928 Glasgow. I now think that she probably wasen't even aware of the disappearance of her brother..whom I'm sure was in Wales in 1891..under a fictitious name,  I have tried for a very long time to find his death under these names, (Brash or Brown) to no avail.

Thanks again, Dolly.
