Hi Gladys
On the 1891 census, Ann Rowley (who is a widow aged 75) is living with her sister. She is called Fanny Madgwick (aged 57) and is married to Robert. In 1851 (second quarter) Robert Madgewick married Fanny Spoor in Sunderland.
I think, therefore, that Ann’s maiden name was Spoor.
I can see this Spoor family in 1841...
Sunderland HO107/321/11 Folio 18 Page 30
Robert Spoor 45 Trimmer Ann do 25 Sarah do 15 Margaret do 15 George do 14 Robert do 13 Fanny do 8 William do 4
Bank Street, Sunderland
All born in County. Some ages rounded.
On the 1851 census Robert (58) is shown as a Widower and four of the children are still at home, Margaret (23), George (22) and Fanny (18) all born Jarrow and William (13) born Sunderland. Sarah (26) who is married to a John George Harland, was also from Jarrow.
I cannot find Ann in 1851, nor can I find a marriage for her, but based upon the above (circumstantial) evidence, I think that there is a good chance that she could be the person who appears with John Rowley on the 1861 census....

Hello DS, i haven`t got that 1891 census for Ann Rowley but have the 1861/71/81 and only the 1901 for Ann living with her relations, John Rowley died 1882 so that must be her in the 1891 also Ann died 1904 aged 88, its a muddle isn`t it So Ann must have been married before as well as John Rowley and Robert Spoor must have died then which i will have a look tomorrow. I do thank you for your help which i appreciate. Gladys.

Hiya DS thank you once again which i appreciate your help. I think John Rowley married Ann Spoor as well. I also think that it should have said Ann Rowley Wifes mother, must have been a mistake with who ever wrote it down and may be couldn`t hear properly. Amm off to have a hunt about for a marriage Gladys.

Hi Gladys
I would think that "Wife's Sister" is correct.
On the 1851 census, Robert Spoor (the father) is shown as a widower. If Ann (as shown on the 1841 census) had been his wife she would not have been around to be able to appear on the later censuses as Ann Rowley.
I would, therefore, think that Ann was Robert's daughter and Fanny's sister.

He married someone names Sarah but it was not in Co. Durham. There is a possible marriage I see in Tynemouth--about the right time. Sarah Gibson 24 Apr 1819. There are several children baptised in Jarrow with Robert and Sarah as parents. By the way my transcript has Ann with mother of Martha. They were transcribed from the parish register and not the Bishop's trancripts.
