Hi, I am trying to trace a boy in 1871 and came across loads of boys aged between 12 and 16, there were no adults on the list, which was 9 pages long. District was Wellesley(1) RG10 5111 Folio 88 GSU roll 847393. Were vessels used as remand centres? I can't see what else it could be.

If you look at page 1 of that batch it is called Wellesley Training Ship.
Interesting - didnt think they did trainig - thought you just went to sea as a cabin boy and worked up!

The third page of the 9 on Ancestry has a Thomas Junior? aged 24, school master.
What a job being responsible for all those teenagers!

The way that vessels in port were enumerated was to lump them under a District name of VESSELS, and then a sub district of the ships actual name - Wellesley in this case .... for some reasons it has 2 enumerators pages Wellesley (1) & (2)
Have a look here for more info on her from enumeration ..

Aha - and Wellesley 2 has the adults on page 1 - some of them with occupation as Training instructor and things like that.
Looks like Wellesley 1 was just the 'dormitories' or equivelent on ship (berths?)

I would guess (risky, I know) that it is, because although most of the crew ansd all the boys are local lads, the seamanship instructors (on page 1 of Wellesley 2) both come from Portsmouth.

a far cry from a hundred years earlier ..... where you could be swept up by a press gang, and taken to sea ..... training on the job ! no special clothes or protection, just do or die !

So, Lyn, hope all this helps! Did you find the boy you were looking for, and have you found him on later censuses to see if he made a career in the Navy? (Maybe he didnt 'pass' at the end of the training)

Hi all, Thanks for the input, my main problem is the boy was Peter Smith and it is a hard name to track.

The old British warship HMS BOSCOWEN changed it's name and purpose in late 1800s--- to TRAINING SHIP WELLESLEY, to serve as a school for a mix of young boys INCLUDING juvenile delinquints, waifs, those "in" Poor Law etc.
This reformatory ship was classed as an "Industrial School"
TS Wellesley was moored at North Shields. It was destroyed by fire in 1914. The school was thereafter land-based in North Shields.
A Wellesley Nautical School was up to very recent times an "approved" school for young offenders, situated in the Northumbrian town on Blyth.
Lots to be seen via Google
Irish-born Arthur Wellesley became The Duke of Wellington... the rest is History !
