Hi -
There are 77 Vanhears on Genes Reunited trees - quite a few "modern" ones, I would be surprised if some weren't related to you!

Amanda - hello again
Well - I have trawled the births index from 1872 to 1877. Gadget has looked in Scotland.
So far as we can see :
There is no birth registered for Robert James Vanhear, Junior or Senior.
There is no Robert Vanhear - or Robert James - or Robert J - on the census between 1881 and 1901, either born 1875 or born of an age to be Robert James Vanhear, his father.
The only Robert Vanhear who is of his father's age was Robert Crisp Vanhear, whose children were Charles and Isabel. He was a general dealer, not a photographer.
Gadget and I have come to the conclusion that Robert James b. 1875 was in all probability James Robert b. 1875 - Edwin's brother.
On the marriage certificate he says he is a marine steward; I have not been able to find James Robert on the 1901 census - this could well be because he was at sea - their father James was a mariner.
I appreciate that the certificate says his father was Robert James, a photographer. However, this information would have been supplied by the groom, and really he could have said his father was a captain in the navy - no check would have been made on that or his name.
I don't know whether you will agree that this is the most likely scenario - and of course there is no apparent proof - unless you have his death certificate? That should have his date of birth, and you could compare it with the the birth certificate for James Robert.
I'm sorry we haven't been able to come up with anything more positive As Gadget said earlier - they did have a lot in common, if James = Robert.

Hmmm - some of the children of John C in 1871 are interesting. e.g. Arthur J, 28, ship's steward!
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/ - navy records show Arthur John Vanhear, b. 2 August 1843, Portsea, and Robert James Vanhear, b. 15 March 1876, Ramsgate.
