Ancestry's 1911 census transcriber at work
|
Hi can anyone find one of my ancestors in the 1861 census for me, she was Margaret Pearce and I know her husband (my great great great grandfather Hugh) also came from Ireland with her sometime between 1859 when my great great grandmother Mary was born in Ireland and 1862 when my Mary's brother Hugh was born in Huddersfield. If it is the right Margaret chances are her unmarried sister Elizabeth Hill will be living with them. I do know Pearce is often misspelt as Pierce, Pierse and Pearse but this is the first time I've found an Irish Margaret Pierce living in Yorks in 1861, the family would have come from Lurgan but as I am not a full member of Ancestry I've been unable to see the full details only Margaret Pierce abt 1831 Ireland living in Yorks, so if you can find anything about the family in the 1861 census it would help narrow down the timeline between them living in Lurgan to eventually settling in Huddersfield
Thanks Julie

Hi DS
There's always a remote chance it could be the same one as the family did settle down in the Huddersfield area, which is close by, but where Hugh would be that night I have no idea as he worked in the linen industry. I think the clinch will be if I can find Margaret's sister Elizabeth Hill living close by, in future census returns she lives with Hugh and Margaret.

Do you have a year of birth for Elizabeth? And for Hugh?

I cannot find anything about Hugh and Margaret in Ireland refering to their births, the only proof of their life in Ireland comes from this wedding
Civil Marriage details relating to marriage on the 06 Jun 1852 Groom Hugh PIERCE Age 22 Bride Margaret HILL Age 21 at the Shankill Church of Ireland in County Armagh. Husband's Father: Hugh PIERCE Wife's Father: William HILL Source: FHL Film 101338 Dates: 1852 - 1852
The age for Margaret would fit the 1861 census, Hugh's birth year must be around 1830 yet in later census returns their birth years slip forward towards 1835-1837
in 1871 they were living at York Street in Huddersfield and Hugh and Margaret are down as being born around 1836 their ages being 35!!!RG10/4369
in 1881 they were living at 6 Schoales Square in Huddersfield and are now both aged 44, maybe their birthdays could have been later that month RG11 4384/183
Poor Hugh not only is he a widow by the 1891 census but now his name is totally misspelt Hirgh Pearce 54 living with his daughter Sarah Anne at 6 Schoales Square, Huddersfield RG12/3569 70 7
Margaret died 29 May 1886 in Huddersfield Hugh died 4 March 1898 in Huddersfield
don't know if any of this helps, sorry for not being able to give any definite birth years, I know most early Ireland census returns were destroyed so I cannot even find anymore family members for clues.

Having had a play around on the 1861 and noted the birth years of the 2 boys on the 1881 - particularly William who was born 1860 in Ireland I would hazard a guess that they didn't come over until after the 1861 census which was taken 7th April 1861.
I can't see any John's or William's born Ireland with parents Hugh and Margaret that remotely fit - regardless of birth years and surname
I notice on the 1871 that Mary is recorded as being 11 years old and born Ireland which does seem to indicate that they were still in Ireland at the time of the 1861 English census.

Hi Tricia
As far as I'm aware here's the list of Hugh and Margaret's children Ireland births
John 1854 William 1856 Mary & William 1859
Huddersfield Hugh 1862 Sarah 1868/9
I've put a post on the County Armagh section to see if I can find the Irish connection through there, but as most of the early Irish census records are incomplete or destroyed there is little chance of finding any info about Hugh and Margaret.

Hi
Do you not find it rather odd that they should have two sons both called William born 3 years apart ?
I know that the immediate response will be that the first one must have died...but on the 1871 census (where their surname is listed as Pearse) both of these Williams appear together.
Does it perhaps suggest that the first William might be Margaret's son from a previous relationship or is it just a mistake on the census ?
Or has this point already been covered somewhere ?

Hi DS
It is very strange, especially as later Mary's twin (William the younger) married and worked on the trams, what happened to William the older I don't know. I know from my Great Gran Grace Sidney's case her parents had died and she was raised with her brother William by her aunt and uncle wwho had a son William similar to Grace's age and a daughter Grace similar to William's age Bet that gave them a headache.
I did wonder about the 2 William's. Maybe they didn't have many ideas for names More likely one must be a nephew raised as one of their own, even so it still seems strange. I got most of my info from other Genes Reunited members and most of it matches what I've come across in the census, other than deaths there doesn't seem to be a lot of info on freebmd or other sites to expand on this family and get a better idea of who was who or in this case who was William
