Do you know if there is records about accidents in the quarries in Bramley Ravensfield Wickersley. I'm looking into the life of a quarryman from 1840 to early 1900s. I've got some info off the Wickersley and Ravensfield site but I wanted to know what the safety was like etc.

Hi duckweed, Had a look on the National Archives site - putting in "Wickersley quarry" into the search engine (nothing came up under the other names). There is information on the following: Wickersley, Ackworth & Hipperholme-cum-Brighouse Quarries Date range: 1817 - 1900. Whether this is any use, or not, only you will know. Hope it does help, Paulene

Looked at the second reference but didn't find anything for that period. There was a Royal Commission but it looked at slate quarrying and didn't look at any Gritstone Quarrying either in Yorkshire or Derbyshire. Found a fleeting reference to the fact that they were paid per item in the Royal Commissions report on occupational hazards of a Grinder and this led to carelessness. But the Commission didn't look at the Quarryman side. Looked up the other reference and found 2 others. How annoying they are in 2 different archives. 2 in Rotherham and 1 in Wakefield. Can see I'm going to have to go to Wakefield this Summer as I have some will queries there too.
