Hi,
I can't help in this case but I am interested in all
Green(a)ways, I have a database on many UK ones, but also interested in the Hunter Valley, have you come across Francis "father of Australian architecture"? Can supply some info on this if you haven't got it.

That would be great thanks - is that what the high school at Beresfield is named after.  It's St Francis Greenway.

Extract from a book casually picked up in a library HuhHuh                           Oxford press 1993

Noted purely because I had been told that a Greenway convict had been responsible for the carvings in a Sydney church................

Greenway Francis Howard (1777- 1837) architect, bap. 23-11-1777 in Mangotsfield Glos. Youngest of three sons of Francis & Ann [Webb], mason, of Mangotsfield.

Pupil of John Nash & through his connection with South Wales was given the opportunity to design a small public building in Carmarthen. Around 1805 with his brothers set up as stonemasons, architects, builders etc. Francis being the architect. In 1806 he designed a hotel & assembly rooms in Clifton, & at the same time was speculating, buying up unfinished houses to finish & sell on. In 1809 was overtaken by bankruptcy & very soon after Francis was accused of forgery in connection with a building contract. He was tried 23-3-1812, pleaded guilty & sentenced to transportation for life.

Arrived in Australia 1814 where he resumed his profession & became the virtual father of Australian architecture. He found a patron in Governor Lachlan Macquarie of New South Wales who appointed him Government Architect in 1816, achieved his emancipation in 1817, but was dismissed from his post in 1822 following the departure of Governor Macquarie.

He had initiated a number of substantial projects in & around Sydney, the Macquarie lighthouse (1816-18) [demolished], Churches of Windsor (1817), Liverpool (1818-24) & St James' Sydney (c 1820) plus Government House Stables (1817)[demolished] Fort Macquarie (1817) & Hyde Park Convict Barracks (1817).

Said to be self confident, temperamental & quick to take offence. After losing his post, he continued in private practice in a small way for some years until 1837 when he retired to a land grant property on the Hunter river.

He was unmarried & died in Sept 1837 (sic)

BUT! ~~~~~~~~-----------------------------------------

Seen in an 1828 census for Sydney N.S.W. @ G.R.O. Kew some years ago: -

If you can add anything to this I would be glad to hear it.

Hi,
I have done a little looking for you.
The Death of Kate Annie  Huxley was 1905.
Her Father was John and the Mother was Elizabeth.
according to NSW BDM.
There was also a Marriage the year before Kate's
Mary Greenway to a Mr Dowey.1864. NSW

There is an shipping entry on the WESTMINSTER leaving Plymouth  and arriving (sorry not sure if this is arrival date or leaving date) 30/7/1841  for John and Elizabeth Greenway in 1841 coming into Port Phillip Bay with Mary.
There is no entry for Kate, though.

This all seems to fit for there are only a few Greenways, and a lot of Greenaways.
No other John with an Elizabeth. Kate may have been born in NSW, and her entry has gone missing, this does happen.
I checked on board births and there was nothing.

I have an interest in Greenaways as well. So far I only have one that I am trying to trace backward. She was Eliza Greenaway married to Joseph Whitten.  Her son Joseph married  Jane Martin in Glasgow, 1878.  I believe they originally came from Ireland, as son Joseph was born there.  Are any of the Greenways in your database from Ireland?  Donna

Me again,
Please don't dismiss info, Irish people get on ships and go via plymouth, when they get to Australia , shipping says they sailed from Plymouth.
My husband came from Aberdeen and sailed from Southampton.
Scots can sail from  Liverpool or London.... anywhere.
Death informants can more often than not be mistaken.
Grandchildren get asked who was Grandmas mother and father called ...........no idea.... same for other next of kin.... mistakes happen.  They guess.
THIS IS JUST TO SAY ..... HAVE AN OPEN MIND.......

I don't know if you Greenway searchers know this man but he knows a lot about the Hutley family.

http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/berniemoore/william_benjamin_hutley.htm
Good Luck.
And Don't Dismiss anything.

Thanks - my cousin has mostly been doing this side of the family and has spoken to some of the Hutleys.  An open mind is something we know about - other messages I have posted - re my father's father does not exist under his name and neither do pop's parents.  So we are starting to think we are not Allen's but Blackmore's.  Thanks for your help it is all appreciated.

Hi Icini,
I have several of various spellings from Ireland, but surprisingly, to me at least, no Josephs. My g'father was born in Co Cavan, son of a soldier.
