Changing Regiments
« on: Wednesday 28 May 08 15:43 BST (UK) »

I have found someone who was in the 7th Dragoon Guards in 1857.He married in 1853 and before I'd even heard of him (he is a first husband) family rumour had it that his wife was  a Nightingale nurse which of course would be 1853-1856 approx. As they had no children until one late in November 1857 this would fit in with either or both returning from the Crimea/ Turkey .I'm wondering therefore as he doesn't appear in the 7th Dragoons until 1857 whether he transferred from another regiment (presumably another set of Dragoons) which had fought in the Crimea and does anyone know where one would find the transfer information?

If you're not too familiar with the military, the first thing is to be careful you don't confuse regiments. 7th Dragoons & 7th Dragoon Guards are completely different, so you need to ensure you're checking the right one.

Probably the easiest thing is if you could tell us his name and whatever else you have on him (ie that 1857 reference) and we can make a few checks.

Definitely 7th Dragoon Guards. It was on his son's birth certificate and we eventually found him in the 7th Dragoon Guards in late 1857 before he drowns in the River Indus in 1858 - This fits in with the fact the 7th were sent out and arrived at the time of the Indian mutiny.(note on the relevant pay roll for the regiment.) his name is James Baker (not a lot help I know- but he could have been John Smith)

As he drowned while serving they should have destroyed his papers 20 years after his death. The Muster and Pay Lists (WO12) are the only likely source of information.

If you do not know where he was born, or his age, I would go back in the Muster Lists until you find him enlisting. You should also check where the Sergeants out recruiting are at the time of the musters as this could point to his place of birth.

Muster and Pay Lists from the 1850s are a bit sparse on FH. information as I am sure you have already discovered. In the 1880s his wife’s name and the ages of any children would be recorded.

Have you found him on the Crimea and Mutiny medal rolls?

No I haven't. The 7th  Dragoon Guards weren't in the Crimea (unlike the 6th and 4th) and their Indian posting  was such that they missed the worst excesses of the Indian Mutiny. So I've found no medals. There is only one child  (James John)and through the censuses he largely takes the surname of his step father I know where  Jameswas born (well Ireland for what its worth) and his father and mother( -Ireland again) they all appear in the 1851 census togetherbut he just seems to appear in the 7th in  1857. Sense saysthat for some reason from 1853 until early 1857 he and his wife were apart:- no kids - but why I wnant to know and if it is true she was a Nghtingale nurse
