This is  the wrong William. Don't know who this one is at all. Its very confusing Shocked

On his birth certificate that I have it states his father as being Matthew Henry(seaman) and mother Margaret Sayers (this is where his middle name is from). He was born Henry Street Sunderland.Margaret was the name he gave my nan .Margaret was also the name of Margarets mother!

He was born 13th October 1889. His first names are down as William Sayers and then it has Henry as his surname. Fathers proffession is Seaman Merchant Service. So I know that this is definately my gt grandfather as he was always known as William Sayers Henry. When my nanna talked about her father she always called him that-even though she never knew him.

I can't remember if anyone actually found my William on the 1891 census at all. Will have to have a look at my previous postings on this site. He's defo on the 1901 one -1nicky has posted  that info on this page already.

Didn't mean to confuse you, it was just that you mentioned he had two different fathers' names on different certs, will have a look for the other 1891 one!

Thanks Barbara that would be great.

When I emailed Durham Records Office last year re: Williams birth cert I had a reply and the lady said that William may not have ever known his fathers (Matthew) name as he was so young when his father died(2/3 yrs) - and put William on his marriage certificate as his fathers name- funnily enough he lists his fathers occupation on the marriage cert as being the same as his own! Very strange if you ask me.

As I said before we've had a right game trying to find out about him from the start!

Would love to know what he actually did after he left the family- but like I said to my mum we have to wait for future censuses to find that out and thats a long way off!  Roll Eyes

Still haven't found him in 1891, so thought I'd look at mother Margaret...

saw her in the workhouse 1881 as you said, with her mother Margaret and brother Thomas

here she is in 1871 if you don't have this:

1871 RG10/5010 fol.74 p.47
25 North Durham Street, Sunderland
William Sayers head m 28 Mariner  Sunderland
Margaret  "      wife  m  30
Mary Bell  "       dau        7
Margaret  "          "        3 months

so his grandfather was called William, maybe that's where the confusion arose on the marriage certificate

The only death I can see for a Matthew Henry is March 1892 aged 28 which could be William's father, in which case he should still be with Margaret and William on the 1891 census unless away at sea, but they're well hidden!

Or that could possibly be this Matthew, in which case I still can't find your William!

1891 RG12/4151  Folio 25 Page 44
22 Gosforth St, Monkwearmouth Shore, Sunderland
Matthew Henry    28  Ship Rivetter
Mary E        "       27
Margt          "        9
Emily           "        7
John Wm     "       4
all born Sunderland

Think we'll have to wait for the death cert and see if it sheds any light

Hi Barbara,

This Matthew Henry is a different one.Unless he had another family we don't know about! Roll Eyes The lady at Durham Records Office  told me about this one also, but said he couldn't be mine as the wifes name was Mary not Margaret.

You have the right Matthew Henry died 1892 (thats the date I have). Like you said though he may have been at sea at the time of the 1891 census.

Coincidently both Williams maternal and paternal grandparents were both called William and Margaret! So Margaret was definately a family name which was passed down to my grandmother and my daughter has it for a middle name also.

So I have no idea where William and Margaret could be on the 1891 census- another mystery. I know where he is on the 1901 census and someone suggested that Margaret was in hospital on the 1901 census as there is a Margaret Henry registered in an infirmary (right age etc) and the fact that he was living with his Margaret  Sayers grandmother leads me to believe that this may be true. I have his  mother Margaret dying in 1909(a year after  the grandmother Margaret died).
