Canonbie ferry tragedy
« on: Friday 30 May 08 13:28 BST (UK) »

Hello All,
I've heard that many years ago there was a tragedy near Canonbie Church when a ferry boat containing parishioners from nearby Kirkandrews Upon Esk  overturned  during a flood.
Does anyone have an exact date for this incident? I have heard it may have been around 300 years ago.
Many thanks,
Bob

Hello Bob,
The event of which you are talking happened on 1st November 1696.

From the same source there is reference to a stone which iis inscribed thus:
Here lyes Frances Armstrong son to William Armstrong in Glinyeir who died in the water on the Lords day Nov. 1. 1696 as he went from the Kirk after the sermon.  Aged 20"

The source for this wee bit of information is the book 'Langholm As it Was' by Hyslop & Booth.  It contains a fuller account of the tragedy written at the time and more about Canonbie and its people including more Armstrongs of that era.
