Hi
I don't want to add to the confusion but I live in Bradford and there are areas of Bradford named Little Horton, Great Horton and also Heaton.
Is there a street address on the certificate which may help narrow down which area you are looking for

Hello Jill!
What sort of place was Horton in the nineteenth century? Do you know?
Iīve no address in Horton for my great great grandparents, unfortunately.
wonder if our ancestors knew each other.
Best wishes,
Aunt Sally

Hi there,
Bradford is/was made up of many sub divisions, for instance I was brought up in Fairweather Green, Bradford, but went to school a mile up the road in Thornton, Bradford. I had relatives who lived a 10 minute walk away and they were in Clayton, Bradford.
I just checked the 1861 census which has my Gt Grandfather, John Gaunt listed and found his records filled in as: Parish Bradford; Municipal Borough of Bradford; Municipal Ward of Little Horton; Parliamentary Borough of Bradford; Town of Horton; Hamlet or Tything etc. Little Horton; Ecclesiastical District of Saint Andrews.
The address was 10 Tumbling Hill St.
My Gt Grandfather John Gaunt, under the "where born" column has Yks. Horton listed, but his brother Joshua has Yks. Bradford. Not sure why, but I will ask my Mother who will know if anyone does!!!
Bradford was a large industrial town and reknowned for its textile industry from the mid 1800s to the late 1960s, which all my ancestors worked in, at the height of the industrial revolution, including my Dad, who later became a Mill owner. It is quite possible that our ancestors knew each other, if not through living in Horton, through working at one of the Mills.
Cheers, Jill

I know Tumbling Hill Street well. It is near the center of Bradford and is now very run down and industrial. Horton stretches from near the City center for approximately 7 miles. The church Of St. John the Evangelist serves the parish but it replaced an earlier one that I cannot recall the name of just now. In some of the earlier census returns the place was known as Horton near Bradford and has a village appearance on earlier maps. A large stone quarry can still be seen to South of the area but the textile industry was the main employer. Dave

Hello Dave,
On the marriage certificate it says only "marraige solemnized at the Parish Church in the parish of Bradford in the county of York". Unfortunately the church is not named. Residence at time of marriage Horton.
The job of my grt grt grt grandfather is also listed - looks like "Gasmaker" - would that be a job relating to the textile industry? Any ideas?
