Hi, I'm looking for some information on the Island of Heliogoland , Germany, c. 1880, did they have their own census and would there be any Parish Records and if so how would I search them? Any help would be appreciated, JOHNNIE

there are a few posts around about Heligoland. If you put Heligoland into the search box on Rootschat you'll get them all. But I remembered about this one - there was a census in 1881, so fingers crossed for you

Hi Johnnie,
Helgoland or Heligoland was at times british, german and danish
you can read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heligoland
it was british from 1807 to 1890, so it may have been in the british censuses, but I don't know. Probably not, as the censuses are for England and Wales, or Ireland, or Scotland.
regards, Bob

Hi Osprey, thanks for such a quick response, so that's 2 of us with connections in Heligoland!
Hi Berlin Bob, thanks for yours also, can I please draw on your vast experience and ask this.... Gt Grandad left Heligoland about 1880, I have his Marr Cert of 1892 stating Born Germany, British Subject. Would that be because married a Brit or was it because of the history of Heli.... Cheers, Johnnie

As far as I know roughly before WWI or a little later a woman would have taken the citizenship of her husband upon marriage, not the other way around.

Hi Aghadowey and Berlin Bob, thanks for the info on British Subjects.
I have posted before regarding this Gentleman, his name was Kerwellis, doesnt sound German to me, family story is he was sent to England c. 1880 due to war brewing? That's all I have other than he is on 1901 uk census, and a marriage cert dating 1892 in Liverpool. Nothing more than that I'm afraid. Johnnie

Hi Bob, Yes - that's my bad penny, as you can see I'm no further on with tracing him having spent hours each and every day trying! He's out there somewhere but where, perhaps I'll never know I even have a relative going to Heligoland on my behalf!!! Thanks for your interest and input and I'll just plod on.. and on .....and on ......Johnnie

Sorry, Johnnie, I have no links to Heliogoland - it just rang a bell that I'd found info previously.
