FRYER Family - Excise Men - Derby and Uttoxeter, Staffordshire
« on: Friday 30 May 08 20:17 UTC (UK) »

My great great grandfather, Thomas Fryer, was born, in #, County #, Ireland, about 1810.

He married my great great grandmother, Ellen (Fryer), in Wellington, Shropshire, England, about 1833.

She was born, in #, County #, Ireland, about 1813.

Their first child, John Fryer, who later became a writing clerk, in Burslem, Staffordshire, England, was born, in Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland, in 1836.

Their second child, Robert Fryer, who later became a manager of a wholesale hatter, in Aston, Warwickshire, England, was born, in Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland, about 1838.

The next three children were born in Wellington, Shropshire, England, and the final two children were born either in Wellington, Shropshire, England or, possibly, in Dorrington, Shropshire, England.

In 1838, Thomas Fryer became an excise man.

This, however, does not explain his earlier mobility.

I have been unable to determine his earlier ancestry.

Recently, however, I noticed that there were at least four other Fryers, three of them in and around Derby, Derbyshire, England, who were also excise men.

Although my father’s third given name, Derby, was, ostensibly, bestowed, when he was born, in 1915, in honour of Edward George Villiers Stanley, the seventeenth Earl of Derby, I have begun to wonder whether my grandfather and great grandfather were also honouring family roots in and around Derby, Derbyshire, England.

James Fryer, Supervisor of Excise, of Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, England, about fifteen miles West of Derby, Derbyshire, England, died about 1808.

John Fryer, Officer of Excise, of Spring Gardens, Derby, Derbyshire, England was born about 1784, and he died on November 12, 1846.

His wife was Mary (Fryer).

William Fryer, Officer of Excise, of Derby, Derbyshire, England, became an excise man in 1843.

His wife, Lydia (Fryer), died, on January 07, 1855, at Wood End, near Strabane, County Tyrone, Ireland.

Another John Fryer, of #, #, England (?), became an excise man in 1855.

As they had an occupation in common, these Derbyshire Fryers may be related to my great great grandfather, Thomas Fryer, which would help me determine his earlier ancestors.

Thank you, very much, in advance, for any information that you are able to provide.

Have you had a look here?

Do you think he may have been in the army?

Sylvery,

Thank you, very much, for your National Archives "Customs officers and Excise men" reference.

I had previously researched the lower level "Excise Entry Papers" information.

However, I had forgotten to look at the information available at the higher level.

I am not aware of any of my closer family members having been in the British Army.

However, Major-General John Fryer was made the Officer in Command, Cork Military District, Cork, County Cork, Ireland on October 01, 1893.

Hi R. Paul R.,
I am also trying to trace information on a gentleman who was an excise officer in 1808, and connected in some way with my ancestor, Thomas Adams.
I came across this site today (the Derbyshire one I've had saved for some while) and thought it might be of interest to you.
The Derbyshire site is a must for anyone researching in this area, and hopefully might be of help.
Hope  you enjoy reading about the life an an excise officer - good luck.
Kind regards,

Paulene,

Thank you, very much, for your reply.

With a bit of community help, we will each iterate our way to the truth behind our particular lineage "mystery".

"Stitching the family quilt", by connecting our close family with our more remote family, including the members of the many other related surname lineages, is a "never ending" task.

Is one able to see The Custom Board Minute Books on-line like one can access Entry for Excise Men.  I have been plodding through the Entry files and unable to put in name to speed things up.  Thanks for any help.

Hi Lookin2,
I don't think they are - but have a look here to check:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=234
I wish they were - it would make life so much easier wouldn't it. Still there's more going online all the time.
Good luck.

Hallo Willow 2

I have been looking for info on Nathan Woodroofe, Excise Collector , and , as I do not live in UK had a kind offer from someone going to Kew and checking the Minute Books.  I was given a lot of info on a Nathan Woodroofe (there were others) starting with a Lancs report.  I was amazed at the amount of movement (different postings etc) that these men had.  Unfortunately, I did not get Entry Paper or the final posting to Old Brentford that would give me a closing but there was mention of a Warrant and Charity Accomptant being arranged for an Ellis Woodroofe and wonder if you know anything about such help being given to Excise Officers who were unable to continue working through either Illness or age and if retiring was a choice they had.  Your thread was very helpful.  Thank you

Hi Lookin2,
I'm glad you found the thread useful. I think we're all learning all the time about what records are available.
I found a little bit of information about pensions for excise officers on the following book and google books:

Pension fund capitalism By Gordon L. Clark

See page 46.

Hope this helps.

P.S. I need to find out about William Harding at some stage; but he was in office before 1808, and so entry papers will not be available Sad
