It may be that they never "officially" married.

Hi Toni

The birth certificate actually shows my gt g/father shown as Henry Darton, and the name Darton is drawn through by pen, with the digit 3 underneath. Father is shown as Walter Bibby, Mother is shown as Sarah Darton, not formerly Darton.  Huh

this would indicate that they [the parents] were not married at the time of the birth
when / if the parents went on to marry the child would become legal and the birth certificate changed i.e. the child re-registered,  but  not in the index, there should be a space in the margin [of the cert] to write any changes.

hi lyn,
just looking through and saw your alias.... have checked out that census and it says they are from chelmsford, had a look for marriages for chelmsford and there is a marriage for george walter bibbey j/u/s 1850 in chelmsford essex.
might be worth checking different areas of essex instead of just the one and also seeing if there is anything to this chelmsford one....might be nothing but worth a check.
hope your'e well.

Well Toni you learn somethinjg new every day  Wink The next step I suppose is to try and locate the birth of one of the siblings and get their B/C.

Hi Amanda. I am well thanks. Still trying to make sense of all the marriages etc between the families  Grin There are a lot of Bibby / Bibbey marriages shown at Chelmsford. From memory I am sure Sarah the wife is shown on the census as b Saffron Walden. It's funny, but when we were kids we used to go to Saffron Walden a lot on family outings. Hope you are going well with your tree. Be in touch  Grin Lyn

Hi exessexgirl,

I was doing some research and came across a news article which I think may refer to Walter Bibby who appears on the Lambourne 1871 census aged 4 in your family group.
Class: RG10; Piece: 1643; Folio: 149; Page: 39;

Although the name is spelt slightly differently, I am sure it is your family.
You can find the news article on my website. Save it to your hard drive as I cannot keep it there for long.

The source is,
Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper August 25, 1895

Hope this helps.

Hi Phil

Many thanks for replying to the posting. Sorry for the delay in replying. I have bookmarked the site, also saved and printed off the article.

I wonder if it is " our " Walter. The age and location would be right. Would'nt  have liked to have come across that lot on a dark night  Grin

Many thank's for taking the time to reply. Your help is much appreciated.

Hi all,

I would love to have a copy of the newspaper article on the Bibbys - they are on my family tree.  The page has expired on the web so could someone send it to me please?  My email is (*)

Many thanks
