Where have d: and e: drives gone!!!
« on: Saturday 31 May 08 08:03 BST (UK) »

A tech installed a new CDRom drive and now have now no d:\ or e:\ drives.  The tech altered quite a lot of my settings including ones for access to the internet [used the business ISP to download] as he felt I should have the upgrades to IE7  Huh I use Firefox and did tell him.    Had IE6 on the hard drive as one or two sites require IE and I use IE options on the Firefox program.  Also defragged and charged me AUD$22 - I do this on a regular basis anyway!!  Also said you didn't have any 'nasties'  Shocked I gather he meant no viruses, trojan worms, etc on the hardrive.  Well I shouldn't as I update Trend Micro daily.  Needless to say I am a tad cross.

I have used system restore to get most of my settings back but still have no CDRom drives showing and if I load a CDRom and type in d:\ run or whatever  or e:\ similarly, I get the message e:\ or d:\ refers to a location that is not available...

I can't return the computer tower to the tech as it involves a 440 km round trip...and with the cost of fuel.  I spoke to him this am and asked if using system restore would gain back my settings....he responded...well, you could try.  Oh dear.  I don't wish to return to that particular business establishment.

Sorry to rant...but live on an isolated property and OH is not computer savvy but listens Grin Grin Grin

Would appreciate some assistance Smiley

Cheers

When you click on my computer it should show you what drives are available.

Hope this helps.

It sounds to me that the techie has accidentally unplugged the cable connecting the D: and E: drives.
It may be that they were using the socket he attached the CD to or it may be he has not changed the jumper settings to allow the drives to be seen as slave drives.
If you are not happy opening the computer it is probably best to call him back.

Thank you Guy.  Unfortunately I transported the tower to the business premises 220 km from our property.  It looks as though I may have to make the 440 km round trip again.

Aaah ....I used system restore to restore to the date prior to the CD drive installation, so any settings the tech has done would not activate.  Looks as though I will have to travel the 440kms again Sad  What a nuisance.  I don't wish to restore to today's date as I will lose all my internet connections including the deletion of my ISDN software [6 phone calls to the ISP 'help' desk caused me to be switched from area to area with no solution so don't wish to go down that path again - only one person understood that I required a 'string' to allow my connection to download from a satellite and use the terrestrial link for the return path...and they couldn't help me with the code!!!!]

I have only had ISP settings 'meddled' with one before and that was an ISP tech who visited our property...and complained about the bad roads.  He altered settings for internet access so have been down this path before..and when he could achieve a connection, told me I must have a virus Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked  He was a tad incorrect.

I will have a look to see if there is a cable between the d: and e: drives...and if it is connected.

Maybe a 'phone call on Monday morning to the business.  Surely they can instruct me per phone how to change/set the jumper settings to allow the drives to be seen as slave drives

I appreciate your input.

Cheers for now

Both your hard drive and your CD drive are masters, if you are using IDE connections.

If you take the side panel off you should see two 40 pin ribbon cables plugged into 2 sockets next to each other on the motherboard.  One of those cables should go into the CD drive and the other goes into the hard drive.  Check that this is the case and make sure the CD connecton is firmly secured.

If the cable is firmly secured then your CD drive might have gone.

Have a look in Device Manager and see if it is listed.

Click on System in Control Panel.
Then click on the Hardware tab and press the Device Manager button.
There should be an entry for DVD/CD-ROM drives.

If there isn't an entry for a CD/DVD drive then try using the Add Hardware wizard in Control Panel.  If it fails to find your CD drive and all the cables are correctly in position then you may have a dead CD drive.

When you get a new provider always print out the internet and email setting that the new I.P sends you Put them in a safe place. I would not have been able get mine back without them.Next time you have contact with a technition put your "i know what I'm talking about face on Grin

Basically do not use System Restore, as it does not cover hardware, only software.  It is true that hardware requires drivers (software) but most CD/DVD drives use drivers written by Microsoft and they are easily extracted from the Windows built-in database library.

IE is built-in to Windows and it is used for Error Reporting and Automatic Updates, so even if you use Firefox, you still have to use IE whether you like it or not.  There is no particular reason to restore back to IE6 but if you absolutely need to then do not use System Restore - use Add/Remove Programs - Windows Components and it will do the job for you.

Thank you downside and celia.

Downside did as you suggested and checked the cable OK - and then Systems > Device Manager showed bother CD drives installed but highlighted with a yellow icon.

Decided to make the 440 km return trip again!!  Corrupt driver...you were right Smiley

Thank you so much for your help.

Cheers for now
