Hi all I've come in here to blow off steam. I've decided that from now on, I'm going to be carefull who I share my info with. I've had two this year one on gencom and one in rootschat, that I have given all my info too, and they have never come back to me. The one on gencom was new years eve. He said send me what you have and I'll gladly share my info. My person was an elder brother of his. I sent everything and not a word since. The one on here contacted me because they thought there was a connection, I sent them what I had and my conclusions and not a word since. Right, thats got that off my chest. Anyone else had the same problem? Sue

Hi Sue,
Just one - but I think they realise we have more than they have - are not as interested as we are - are not as quick as we are, have a different line than we have.
That's enough excuses - it's still annoying!!
But keep waiting for a reply - and keep sending information - the next time you might get more than you expected!!
Cheers
Keith

I made contact with a "cousin" - I think actually 4th cousin, once removed. Anyway we exchanged a lot of info, which was a fair trade.
I was then contacted on Rootschat by another "cousin", who was in contact with the first one. She offered me a fair bit of info, in exchange for what I had. Fair enough I thought, so I sent on my info. Never heard a thing from her since. I know she received my info, as it is on her homepage. I don'T mind the fact she's used it, the fact she simply copied my complete email onto her site, including the "Regards and signature", without a word of acknowledgement, I find well out of order.
I do think that we make the most progress when we share with each other, but a short email of ackowledgement is the least they could do.

I totally agree with you there. A short note to says thanks, at least. Someone the other day saw I was looking for a birth, and when she went to the registry office looked it up for me. She sent me a message on her return, totally out of the blue. I was so pleased, and sent her a note back to thank her. But I have seen lots of replies, where people have gone to a lot of trouble to find info out for people and they have never answered them, not even to say thanks. Sue

Hi Sue
It seems to be more of problem with the electronic age that we live in. I've been researching years and never had any problem with any of my many co-researchers. However, by sharing info electronically, I've seen 2 of my quite extensive trees appear on the net! It's not a problem with sharing the info but they don't even ask then publish your (10/15 years work in these cases) trees on the web. Wouldn't you publish it yourself if that's what you wanted? Well, then when you get emails saying "Go look at this tree that so and so has put together" ................ . It just makes one more cautious nowadays.

Remember this: that for all the bad contacts, there is always a good one that we appreciate all the more. We have all been there but do not give up hope, someone with your passion will contact you. Sort of like dating and sifting through the duds to find "Mr. Right".

Hi Susie I do agree with you that an acknowledgment to a reply is a must if only to let the lookerupper know they have seen it, but just because you don't see one on the site doesn't mean there as not been one,I have received a lot by PM.

Hi nutkin, I know what you mean about sifting out the duds lol I met my partner on the internet. Everyone said I was mad, but we had so much in common. Year we were born, where we were born, both were living 250 miles from where we were born, childrens names, same date we had both married, same interests etc etc. Sue

Peter,
Good point, a lot more PM'ing goes on than most people are aware of I think. I get 10-15 PM's a day, and I am sure regular looker-uppers get lots too.
Sue,
I recently was off-line for nearly a month due to a series of unfortunate events, maybe one of these corespondents is having problems.
Please don't let these upsetting experiences put you off sharing your information, some people can turn out to be lovely, helpful and friendly. I have had only good experiences with sharing my data, so far, I did wait several months for one of them to get back to me though. But when we finally made contact we got on great, and I learnt a lot from the contact.
Kazza.

Honeybun and others,
I wonder whether some people get enthusiastic about it all to start, hit all the sites and message boards, than realise it is not as straightforward as they thought it was going to be. Maybe they have experiences that dis-illusion them, people do not return mails, that sort of thing. Then it all losses it's appeal, but they don't remove themselves from lists and boards.
Also, sometimes life gets in the way, and genealogy has to take a back-seat. Maybe they will get re-enthused, maybe they will move on to another interest. Not everyone is as dedicated as we are.
Good Luck,
Kazza.
