Help Please Trystan!
« on: Thursday 20 January 05 11:33 GMT (UK) »

Thank you, I now have a webspace  rootsandbranches.rootschat.net .
But what to do with it?
I have read through every topic on this page and still do not understand the language!! I'm afraid it is all gobbledegook to me and yet I would really like to rise to the challenge.
You mention that you can upload gedview for people. Could you do this for me please.
I would be most grateful.
Look forward to hearing from you
Regards.........................Cybrgran (Better change that to Thickgran!!)

Hiya,

What would you like to do with your webspace - that's the main question?

The phpGedview is just so that you can show your family tree on the internet, but doesn't give you the ability to create and "ordinary" webpages.

Do you have a Gedcom file to upload?

Hope to hear from you soon,
Trystan

Hello Trystan

Yes I have my Tree on Family Historian and also I have written my Family History plus photographs. I think the latter would be more interesting to put on my webpage or perhaps both?

What would you advise?

Sylvia,

There is a very good "content management software" that I've just found called "Etomite" (see www.etomite.org ) - after setting it up, you can add your own pages "online" by logging into your own website. (A couple of sites using it on the RootsChat webspace are: sarah.rootschat.net and acorn.rootschat.net as an example).

I can set it up for you if you like, it takes about twenty minutes for me to set up, you can then add pages to it to tell your story of your quest in tracing your forefathers for the whole world to read. Smiley

Yes please Trystan, I would like to 'have a go' at 'Etomite'.

As long as it comes with an 'idiots guide'!!? or a very patient  "hand holder"

Regards.............................cybrgran

ps. if  cannot grasp how to work it do I have the opportunity of trying something else? don't want to burn my boats.

Cybrgran,

I've uploaded it, so that you can give it a shot anyhow - it doesn't come with an "idiot's guide" I'm afraid no, but it's very straightforward and I'm not aware of anything much easier. You can get help at www.etomite.org - they have a forum similar to this one, and it's there to support their software.
(See http://www.etomite.org/wiki/EtomiteDocumentation/UserGuide for the user guide - but the guide is more complicated that using it)

To edit your website, click on the "Edit" (at the bottom right) and use "admin" as the login, and your password is the one that you used to get your free webspace.

I've started off your website with a few (quite empty) pages, to give you some ideas.

To add more pages just click "New Document", and be sure to press the Save button on that page.

To make pages appear "under" other pages in the menu (like the surnames under the "Surnames" on the menu), just click on the Surnames "folder" on the left while you are editing a page.

Have fun,
Trystan

Good luck!

Just do a very small change to start off with - perhaps just add a few words to the "Introduction", then save it, then have a look.

The smaller the steps, the better the chance that you'll be alright with it.

Cybrgran,

I've just had a peek at your site - I'm really pleased that you're got stuck into it, and added to your site already - new pages, pictures and all. Brilliant!

Thanks Trystan, but it is proving very frustrating as I am trying to cut and paste from my original document and it keeps muddling it all up !!
I have registered on the Etomite Forum but as yet I cannot understand what
they are talking about!!

Still if I can tackle it anyone can.

Trystan,
I would also like to use Etomite to write my web pages. Is it still possible for you to set this up for me.

Trystan,
Please go ahead and set up Etomite for me. Is there anything I need to download from their site first.

Ajay,

No, you don't need to do anything at all, just sit back and wait for me to let you know that I've set it up for you. If you give me a day or so, it will be up and running for you.

Hi Trystan
I would really appreciate getting Etomite set up to use in my webspace. I have been having a bit of a play at home and I think I can work it out.
The website I have been using to communicate with my family is completely written via html in Notepad and this looks simpler and more flexible for a part timer and simpleton like me.
All the help you've been giving folks is wonderful. Where do you find the time to do this? Many, many thanks.
Kat

(Update - Actually I have since decided to take a different route so I don't need you to do this for me any more. But I'll no doubt have more questions about uploading my pages.)
