Hi MeWMeW
There seem to be 2 Richard Pauls born 1859 Bethnal Green, one with parents Frank & Elizabeth, so that may be the confusion
Will have another look

On 1901 census image "Wnifred" is entered a just an intitial -crossed out -and then winifred squeezed in afterwards-maybe enumerators error -or maybe Richard remarried -coldn't find a suitable death for Jane -or a remarriage to Winifred? ??
Barbara may be able to decipher it???

It would appear to be the right Richard in 1901 although his occupations changed, the children are the same! I think the same as you Suz.
Sarah, do you have his marriage certificate to Jane, or one of the children's birth certificates showing her full name, I wonder if she had a second forename - or else it could just be a mistake on the census, as Suz says.

It is the same family. Can't find a marriage to a Winifred. Agree with Suzard, it's a bit of a scribble, and could be an error.

I think you need some certificates even if you are sure this is your Richard.
I was looking for my g.g gran on the 1841 census and thought I'd found her, especially as I knew the names and dates of birth of her siblings, but when I got her marriage certificate (1842) and found her father's name, I realised that the family I'd linked her to was completely wrong, even though all the names and ages of the children were the same and they were all born in Lincolnshire!
