Hi timsouch,

sorry, but it doesn't work that way - there is no equivalent to the british GRO  Sad

In Germany you have to know exactly which registry office you need, or possibly even in which church they were born or married.

You also have to prove that you are a direct descendant, although that law is changing / due to change soon.

Can you supply some more information, then we might be able to help more.

regards,
Bob

Hi Tim,

I looked in the TNA and found what looks like naturalisation papers for your grandfather:
GMACH, L T Date of birth 20.12.1885

Do you have these already ??

For the birth certs. I'm not 100% sure, but I'll ask on the german forum.

regards,
Bob

Looks like you're in luck  Grin

I just looked on GEDBAS, a german "add your GEDCOMs" site,  and found your family there too.
http://gedbas.genealogy.net/  (enter gmach in Nachname)
the tree goes back to the 1650's and there is a contact address for the guy who put the GEDCOM online.

Do you speak german ?? If not, write to him in english, and if there are any problems, let us know, somebody here will translate for you.

ps.

LT (1856) married Anna BAUDL, born 12.06.1857
and LT (1821) married Anna Maria KRAUS, born 03.04.1823

do you notice a particular naming pattern here  Grin

An answer from Ahnenforschung.Org:
Quote
Friedhard Pfeiffer

In other words,
After 1876 there was civil registration, and direct descendants kann apply to the Registry Office in Munich,

otherwise, if he was catholic, you can apply to the Diocese Archives

Dioezesanarchiv München,
Karmelitterstr. 1,
D-80333 München

and if he was protestant (evangelical), then you need to know the parish, as the church books will be in that parish.

regards,
Bob
