Church records
« on: Today at 01:38:32 »

I am hopeful someone can help. I believe I have some ancestors born about 1710-1720 around Alston, Cumberland. I can find the marriage records for the area but would like to find actual birth records. I take it this would be church records since no-one else recorded these things back then But which and where could I see them?

Hi Kiwiham
Are you in New Zealand ?

Have you tried looking on Familysearch.org?

Yes, I am in New Zealand.

Yes, I have looked on Familysearch.org. Not at all sure what you mean, though. IGI is only good for records that have been uploaded by people. They are not a source of official information (although they do have some census info - mostly American). They certainly don't have Church records. Needless to say, I am looking for very early records.

The IGI batches for Alston start at 1701 and there are certainly plenty of baptisms for the early 1700s.

From 1762-1830, the actual registers (or BTs) are online at

OK, that's fine. In fact, for the name I am interested in (Bramwell) there were a total of 5 + 6 (11) names in the earliest batches. Earliest was 1732. Not early enough, I am afraid. The names I am researching start about 1710, a whole generation earlier.
