In the early days of Australia, if you paid your own fare, no-one seemed to care very much as to who you were and where you were from. If you were a convict, or assisted immigrant, the govt kept good checks on you

The moral of the story being - if you want to find your roots - hope your ancestors were poor or dishonest  Roll Eyes

Trish

Only too true - and depressing, when one cannot find the arrival of middle class pillars of moral rectitude!

Hi Trish,

Could you please do me a HUGE favour and check out my Holdsworths for me. I don't have access.

I have them in England on the 1851 Census and then they turn up in New Zealand via Australia in the mid 1860's.

Am looking for     David, born about 1898
Mary Eliza or Maria  born 1811
                            Children or any combo of;

Ann Elizabeth born 1839 or 1847
                            Martin Luther
                             David , 1834
                             Eliza
                             John Torr  1837 approx.

Thanks,
Trish

Hello Trish  Smiley

Not much joy - the unassisted lists have no information & the transcriptions have included CREW! and there were 2 or 3 Holdsworths who thus make up 75% of the list! This was my best shot - but looking elsewhere, not likely

Mr Holdsworth London to Sydney arrived 9 Feb 1857 Lord Warriston
Also on board Misses Holdsworth
There are actually 4 Misses - from here
http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/1857/02/022lor.htm

Given your time frame - you can check all the assisted here
http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/indexes_online_3357.asp#ImmigrationampShippi

There is a small amount of extra information on ancestry - if you find anyone let me know & I'll check (but I don't see your folks)

For unassisted you can check here - the search routine is rather basic, but the transcriptions are better than ancestry & if you find them - the scans are given
http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/
The additional information on ancestry is for earlier and later years than you are searching.

Hi Trish,

Thank you very much for your help. I had searched on most of those sites and was hoping for a breakthrough on Ancestry.
Unfortunately David was a Draper, and probably had some money and would be listed as Mr. Holdsworth. He possibly came out with one of his sons and then the rest of the family joined them in N.Z.

Did find my g/grandfather William Leggett ( from Yarmouth, Norfolk) as crew member  Grin Grin
Thanks again for your time and help.

The information Ancestry gives is certainly scant.  I had a look at that mariners site but they are not up to the years I want yet.  Will have to cultivate patience (very difficult!) as I'm hoping for some further info that might confirm, or otherwise, what my cousin has found on Ancestry re Bentleys coming to Sydney.

The information on unassisted immigrants is scant MarieC - the images given on the mariner site show all that is available! and it is not much - in many cases only Mr xyz passenger.

My problem with the ancestry indexes is that they have everyone as an immigrant - crew and all - it generates hundreds more folks and causes the same name to be duplicated over and over - as crew kept coming back. It also includes all trips into Sydney - many being from other states. I wish they would look at quality as well as quantity  Roll Eyes
