As in Backwards or forwards.....
Alfred Canute Swiffin Couper married Q4 1849 South Shields
poss brides are ...Jane Blakely Elizabeth Chesser Thomasine Marshall Ann Thorp.
However this must be a son then as he marries Ann Thorp & I can find them in the census of 1871.

Hi
He also appears on the 1881 census, which can be seen at http://www.familysearch.org/ free of charge, as Alfred Canate Cooper born 1821. He is living with his wife, Ann, at 31 Orange Street.
In 1901 he appears again as Alfred C S Cooper, a Widower aged 80, still living at 31 Orange Street.
In 1891 Ann Couper (aged 73) is at that address on her own.

Regarding Mrs Couper who married as Ann Thorp in 1849 (as Tazzie has already said)....
I believe that Thorp was her married name and that she was originally called Ann Stout.
I think that her first husband, Joseph Thorp, died in 1846.
IGI Batch M000982 contains what I think is her first marriage...
1839 Heworth, Durham - Ann Stout & Joseph Thorp
On the 1861 census, Ann Couper is shown with two sons, Alfred Couper (who also appears with her on the 1851 census) aged 10 and John Stout Couper aged 6.
But the real giveaway was that the South Tyneside Registration site gives alternative names for her regarding the 1849 marriage to Alfred C S Couper.

From FreeBMD they had already had a child that they called John Stout Couper in the last quarter of 1853 but he had died in the same quarter.
Sadly, the second John Stout Couper seems to have died in 1876 aged 21.
Their only other child, Alfred born in 1850, appears on the 1851 and 1861 censuses with his mother, Ann and also on the 1871 census with both parents and his brother.
He does not appear again, because he also died in 1880 aged 30.
DS
Addendum: The burial of John Stout Couper (infant) is listed on the National Burial Index. He was buried on 23/10/1853 at South Shields, Holy Trinity.

Hello folks thanks for taking the time to send your replies.
I made an enquiry with Lloyds Register about the "James Freeman" and they could only tell me that A. Couper was the Master when it sank they can't give me any further information re: other crew on board. I have sent out another six enquiries trying to find details of Johns' demise. Alfred Couper was found in the 1881 census with his wife Ann and DS had provided details of his family, I had found John Stout Couper in my research but before this had been unable to place him in the family tree.
I was hoping to find Alfred's parents and try to fit them into John's family...being born in 1821 he would more likely be John's cousin (John born 1826) as we didn't find him amongst the eleven children of Robert and Ann Couper. He must be part of this family as he was the Master on Robert's ship. Gumball

Hi Gumball......
As we have found his marriage the next step would be to order the cert for the marriage in 1849. It will list his fathers details as long as he was not illegitimate of course.
Can be ordered from the link given by DS above or from GRO .
Is your John the one on Curious Fox b Queensferry married to Ellen Humble?

Hi Tazzie, Yes that is my enquiry but we have just about proven to my satisfaction that that was the wrong John Couper (born Queensferry, Scotland) we now believe my John Couper, son of Robert and Ann Couper of South Shields, Durham, is my ancestor. Gumball

The below info from the Dictionary of Sailing Ships ( on the River Tyne) by R.Keys.
The "JAMES FREEMAN", 248 ton brig, built 1840 at Hartlepool by JP Denton. Was registered out of Hartlepool, then registered on the Tyne from 1851 to 1860, when sold on.
Master from 7.5.1851 John Couper Master from 10.5.1852 to 6.3.1854 ACS Couper
Owner from 16.4.1851 Robert Couper, sole owner, of South Shields Owner (part) from 30 4. 1851 Samuel Couper, ship owner of South Shields... owning 16/64ths.
Ship lost 21 Oct 1860. --------------------------
So it would appear that ACS Couper was not master when the ship was lost, but a Couper was part owner when it was lost
