Burt family, births deaths and marriages
« on: Tuesday 03 June 08 06:13 BST (UK) »

Hi all,

Could someone please help me find details on the following family.
Lincoln Claude Burt married a Maria Mary Wallace/Wallan.
need marriage date?
children to this marriage, there should be 2 boys and 2 girls.
We know of  one that went down on the Sydney in 1941 - Alwyn Stewart Burt.
Alwyn was born in 1920.
There was also a Lyndon - found his marriage in 1930 but cannot find his birth or death.
There was a Marie Zene/Lene - found her birth and marriage.
There was another girl, possible a Faye, cannot find any record on her.

Any help appreciate, and if possible by tonight Grin, Aunty is leaving tomorrow.

cheers
Margaret

There is a war service record for Lindon Claude Burt WWI (I went looking thinking about the gap in the births 1912-1920) It is fully digitised & says he was born 10 Jun 1883 in Tasmania - wife Maria

I don't have the recent Tasmania disks - perhaps they married there. I can check to 1899, but may find very little

Trish

Edit: Lindon Charles BURT is registered in Tasmania
Father William Thomas
Mother Margaret Maria Web
10 Jun 1883 ref 405

This is from the AVRI - the names seem to change
Also
Maria Mary Wallace  also born Tasmania
Father James
Mother Amy Ann PURTAIN
20 october 1881 ref 72

Siblings for Lindon born Tasmania
Gordon Robert 29 Oct 1885 ref 641
Nevin Lyell 26 Jul 1880 ref 768

Ahhh, so it was Tassy, that explains why I couldn't find them.

The reason being so urgent, is my hubbys Aunt is staying here and she was engaged to Alwyn Burt before he left for the war, and of course he was killed on the 'ss Sydney.'
A fellow from the school he went to had advertised in the Herald/sun asking about relatives, and it just happening that this Aunt was staying here for a few days, talk about strange coincidence.

Anyway, she is talking to him now and I have passed on what you have all given
Thankyou so much for helping with this little urgent project.

kind regards
Margaret

Hi Trish,
no she does not have a photo of him.
Married twice since.
She was 20 when she was engaged to Alwyn, she was telling me about when the news first came out that the Sydney had gone down and there was nothing definate said about any survivers, that an Uncle told her "wipe your tears and get on with it, you won't be seeing him again"
She said her uncle was a very hard man.

She has already left, plane from melbourne to Sydney then back to Brissy.
Quite the jetsetter.  Grin
She was great company and I managed to get a lot of goss on hubby's side of the family. Oh and she corrected my spelling errors in some of the history I had done for their side of the family Roll Eyes

thanks again for all your help, the gentleman was in total amazement when I told him I had a lady staying with me who was engaged to the fellow whom he was inquiring about.  I am still in awe about the coincident as this Aunt wasn't supposed to be staying with us, it was only that her brother, FIL, whom she was supposed to be staying with, was taken to hospital.

cheers

I have such mixed feelings about accessing the war records for our family history - they tell us so much but are full of such heartache and grief - My mother was named for her uncle who died in WWI - he left a 20 year old widow (they had spent about 2 weeks together after the marriage) who took many years to recover  - so perhaps the Uncle's advice in your case, was not such a bad idea - but sounding so heartless.

I think you're right Trish ..... sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind !!  Undecided

Those were the days when death was expected .... it was war time ... not many young men thought that they would come home ( oh they did at first ... but as the war wore on they prepared themselves for the inevitable ! )

I am so glad I've been able to read about my family .... it makes me realise why my Granddad became the man he became .... after everything he'd been through ( and many others like him ! ) he was expected to come home - go to work - pretend like everything was OK and life went on !!

All the stories I heard about him growing up ...... although they were true .... I can now understand ! I just wish that I could tell him that !!

Hi Trish and Annie,
yes, I imagine for most, death was expected in wartime.
But I think for young girl of 20, just engaged, a little bit of diplomacy might have been needed.
She grew up into a strong independent person, in fact - at the age of 76, her and her friend, 79, did a world tour.   Cool
I can only wish I was as independent as her at my age.

thanks all, truly appreciate your input.
