Been researching our family name for some years and I have tracked down John Adam (or Adam John?) Eidmann to the East End of London, possibly Mile End or thereabouts. On the 1841 census he gives his place of birth as "Foreign Parts". I suspect its Germany and wondered why he would have moved to London, possibly around 1770, how can I track down where he came from? I think it may be around Damstadt Hesse area. Another contact I have thinks there was Moravian influences, but from what I know, they were a "normal" protestant family. Any help appreciated!

Hello,
What makes you think it was Hessen-Darmstadt? This was an independent territory in the 18th century, covering quite a large part of modern-day Hessen.
There is still a bit of a concentration of that surname in Hessen - both north and south.
Have you found any birth or marriage records for these Eidmanns?
I have been spending a lot time over the last few weeks researching my German ancestors who settled in t he East End some twnety years before yours.

Hi, Mainly because of the concentration of the name in the area - seemed the logical point to start I suppose. Have a record of Adam John Eidmann's marriage in Mile End New Town, via Pallots Marriage record, but of course that doesn't give much away. The "foreign parts" info comes from 1841 census and he died in 1843, so that's as much as I can find at present. Can't find his occupation either, which might give a clue, although the family, later on, seemed to work in shipping (a couple of ancestors being Master Mariners).

Did you see that he married twice? Once in St. Dunstan's in 1795, then to Ann Knight in St. Mary's Whitechapel in 1805.
Maybe some kind soul (Dawn?) would look up the entries in the marriage registers.
Have you seen the baptism of Johannes Adam Eydmann on 22 Dec 1776 in Hoechst im Odenwald? This would have been in Hessen-Darmstadt.
I would recommend that you obtain his death cert.

Yes I did notice that, after some time, as both wives were called Ann! It seems he went on to have a large family with second wife as well. What you have found is very interesting and worth looking at further - thank you.

After three attempts via GRO finally obtained Adam's death certificate, but it gives no info as to his origins. He was 77 when he died in 1843, occupation listed as "Kine(?) Cooper" and son in law informant (I already have his details,,etc). Name is spelled as "Eidmann" - last "n" has now been dropped by family.

JustinL - can you let me have details as to where you found the christening of Johannes Adam Eydmann? Would like to pursue this further - death certificate gives no info as to my Adam's origins. Thank you.

Sorry folks, I'm being a bit slow in responding.
Anyway, Anna found the baptism as I did in the IGI. Unfortunately he's ten years younger than your Johann.

According to death certificate he was 77 in 1843, however, census in 1841 lists him as 70 - so who knows? it could be him.

I am researching the name Eydmann (sometimes Eydman)and in particular those present in the Chiswick, Richmond, Mortlake areas in the early 19th century. Have you any information which might be of interest?

Thanks. Any further forward on how Eydmann (etc.) came to England and from where? Any link between the East Enders and the Chiswicks?

traced the name to Damstadt Hesse in Germany. Not sure why they came here, my ancestor is Adam Eidmann, he is shown on 1841 census and states he is from "foreign parts"! Not sure what occupation he had, but we have recently unearthed a document that gives more info - my cousin has it and will forward it to me, so I will be able to list what it says then! They seemed to have worked around the docks, with shipping, etc. Later ancestors were sea captains and ships engineers.
