I am looking for a marriage of a Elizabeth Davenport and a Peter Vawdrey in Cheshire. Alll of their children were born in Sandbach so the marriage would probably be closeby. Family records give the date as 22 Jan 1824. I specially would like to know if this date is correct and where the marriage took place and also if this records states that Elizabeth is a widow. I would appreciate any help given with this. Alane

Hello Avbec I don't know if it helps, but years ago i found my G.G.Granparents marriage in the chester & Cheshire archives. They married by Banns in the parish of warmingham in 1821? All their children were born and christened in sandbach because that as far as know was where they always lived.

Hello Alane,
There's a marriage for the date you give, that might be worth checking out. 22/1/1824 at St Peter's, Swettenham - Peter Vawdrey (carpenter) to Elizabeth HARDING (widow)
Maybe there's some confusion about her maiden name and her former name?
There's also this other earlier marriage at St Peter's, Swettenham - 17/2/1812 Elizabeth DAVENPORT to a Hugh Harding.
odessa.

Odessa, Thank you so much for finding the marriages for me. I think Harding was Elizabeth's (Betty) married name and her maiden name was Davenport. Did the marriages list any parents for the bride and groom in both the Vawdrey - Harding marriage and the Harding- Davenport marriage? Just want to make sure I have the correct people. What did you look at to find the marriages?? And how might I go about checking the marriages out myself. Thank you again, Alane

Alane,
I used the Bertram Merrell Marriage Index of Cheshire.
I would recommend you look at the original entries in the parish registers, either on film, or by applying to the Cheshire Records Office for a photocopy from the film for each entry (quite reasonably priced). Unfortunately the entries will not give you the parents names at this point in time, but you may find the witnesses names of use, and it would appear that the occupation of "carpenter" has been noted for Peter Vawdrey
A good bet would be to try and follow the occupation of carpenter for Peter Vawdrey, it should show up in any baptisms of children to the couple known to have had children born in Sandbach if you can check Sandbach parish registers.
I'm afraid it's just a case of eliminating every other possibility and tracking down every scrap of evidence you can find from parish registers, wills, census etc.
Good Luck. odessa.
