Hi

I'm trying to trace any details of my great-grandmothers parents, especially their parents and was hoping someone here may be able to help/point me in the right direction.

My gr-gran was Lizzie Lofthouse. Born 7.3.1907 in Tadcaster
Her parents were John Lofthouse and Ellen Ibitson.
In 1930 (when Lizzie married) they lived at Hillside Cottage in Tadcaster and I'm told my my gran they lived there for a very long time.
Lizzie was a ladies maid for a weathy family in Tadcaster who had a summer home in Fort William which is where she met my gr-grandfather John McPherson.

Any help or information would be very gratefully received.

I think you may be in luck. It would be best to go back through certificates to make sure you are on the right track but it seems as though great grandmother Lizzie was the youngest of a few children so they are already married in 2 censuses.  Grin

How would I go about viewing their marriage certificate (I'm assuming that would give me their parents?)?

Is there an English equivilant of Scotland's people or would I just have to buy the cert and hope for the best?

now we go into possible difficulties

a search for 1881 gives 10 John Lofthouse born 1865 +/- 2 yrs and none with the birthplaces given in 1891 and 1901.

1871 RG10; Piece: 4830; Folio: 44; Page: 12

Husthwaite
Robert Lofthouse 63 yrs ag lab b Yorkshire Stillington
Elizabeth 64 yrs b Hull
Mary daur unmarried 20 yrs seamstress b Husthwaite
John grandson 6 yrs scholar b Husthwaite

sadly it is a bit difficult tracing back from here due to irregular place names etc so probably certificates will be needed to check parentage. If you find those, then we can find more info from censuses.
