Many thanks again for all your help.
I have just been going through all your earlier replies. I think that Arthur, Joseph and John being described as 'Step sons' confirms that Martha married again. All the dates seem to fit. It looks like Maryann & Alice Moles were perhaps from an earlier marrige of James. Not sure about William.

They really are hidden in the 1900 census, or missed. I even checked passenger lists, thinking maybe they visited family in England. No luck.
