1841 census lookup for Islington/Clerkenwell area please for Hickmott
« on: Tuesday 03 June 08 22:28 BST (UK) »

Hi, Smiley
Please could someone look up Sophia Hickmott on the 1841 census for me please. I think she will be found in the Islington/Clerkenwell area. Her mother was Jane Elizabeth Hickmott.

Many thanks.

Hi Carole, Smiley
Sorry about that, yes I'm sure it is the correct one, Sophia was born c 1840.
Thank you so much. Do you think some of the ages are incorrect as Jane's father was called John Crouch and her husband must have been John Hickmott. So probably John Crouch should be listed as 45 and John Hickmott 25? Does it give a street name or is it just St. Batholomew the great?

There is an indecipherable one word address which covers everybody listed on the same page (50 people)

The Hickmott ages and names are all very clear and John Hickmott is shown as the first entry with Ann next.  John Crouch could possibly be 35 rather than 25.  Perhaps the Hickmotts were her in-laws.

I notice that Jane married in 1845 - is she shown as a widow on her marriage cert as I cannot see a Crouch/Hickmott marriage on freebmd

Ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years in 1841 for all people from age 16 upwards so you could potentially add on 4 years to each of the adult ages shown

Jane is married to an Edward LOWE by 1851 - HO107/1501/234/61. Sophia HICKMOTT aged 10 listed as his daughter in law, which was common for step children in those days.

Going back couple of pages in the 1841 entry the address is Middle Street.

Hi Carole & Ian, Smiley
Thank you both so much for the info, it is beginning to make more sense now. Yes, Jane was a widow then.
Is it possible to find John & Ann Hickmott on the 1851 census please?
