If when you get new photos.documents etc. on Cdrive, just right click on the photo, go to send to, to external drive.
The item will appear as an icon on the desktop and you can then place your pointer over the icon, left click(hold down the button) and you can physically move the icon over to the correct folder and drop it in.
You can do that if any of your information is out of order in any way.
Hope that is of help, as I find that way very simple

What I do is go to my computer, click on the folder I want to move stuff from, make the window smaller so it fits half the screen.
Go again to my computer, click on the folder I want to send it to, make that smaller so I then have two folders on the screen side by side.
I then right click on what I want to move and copy, then select the receiving file, right click and paste, once I am sure it is where I want it I delete from the original folder.
Might seem a bit long winded but I never lose stuff that way.

Bogga,
I'm never too sure about pasting,to an external hard disc, as surely the original is still on the C;drive?
I took the "box" to my daughter's and a couple of pasted items came up as errors and "Windows is unable to" etc.

Good advice ! I learned a big lesson (the hard way !) when I first started using Windows - never use move ! If an error occurs during the process, you will lose the file. So, always copy & paste, and then (if necessary) delete the original when you've copied if you need to, although it's not a bad idea to have copies of important files in lots of different places
