David Edis b:1831
« on: Wednesday 04 June 08 09:29 UTC (UK) »

Hi Everyone

I'm totally stuck. I am trying to find the parents of David Edis born 1831 in Woodnewton, Northamptonshire.

Based on David's marriage certificate of 1852 his father is William Edis from Dogsthorpe. I have trawled through Ancestry.com and Findmypast and cant' find David's parents anywhere. I also can't find David before the 1861 Census. Although I believe he may be in the 1841 Census as a 9 year old Agricultural Labourer living in Town Street, Elton, Huntingdonshire.  Any help would be very much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Leanne

Hi Leanne,

Welcome to RootsChat  Smiley

I'm wondering if he told a little white lie about his father when he married!

Extracted IGI christening from www.familysearch.org
DAVID EDIS
Christening 06 NOV 1831   Woodnewton, Northamptonshire
Mother MARY EDIS

No father listed, which suggests he was born to a single mother  Smiley

Also living in Elton in 1841 were
Ann Edis 30 Born in Hunts
Elizabeth Edis 15
Ann Edis 12

And a couple of doors away from David were John and Frances Edis and family, so Elton does seem to have a few Edis' living there. In fact there are a lot of extracted Edis' in Elton on the IGI - www.familysearch.org

Woodnewton and Elton are only a couple of miles apart

Greetings Leanne,
I did not find David Edis in the Elton PR.
However my sister has the WoodNewton Fiche   Grin Grin

Baptism: Entry No. 244   6 November 1831 David Illegitimate son of Mary Edis  Woodnewton, Single Woman, W.Wing Jnr. Curate  FHL Fiche 6129492   Parish registers, 1588-1948  Church of England. Parish Church of Newton-Wood (Northamptonshire)

Just occurred to me I should have tried to find a William Edis in Elton. There are quite a few Edis in this Parish.
