Found the 1841 Census...

College Philorth, Fraserburgh

Al Middleton, 40 Blacksmith b Aberdeenshire
Mary Middleton, 40 b Aberdeenshire
James Middleton 18 Ag Lab b Aberdeenshire
Elspet Wemyss Middleton 15 b Aberdeenshire
Robt Middleton 10 b Aberdeenshire

Elaine

I have a new lead.
I overlooked one entry on the 1808 Fraserburgh Militia Roll.

There was a Robert Middleton. He was a resident of Fraserburgh and was 28 years old. A possible father of William. The other Middleton was a George aged 17, so he was too young to be my Alexander's father.

The search continues...

Over a year later, I think I have come to my conclusion.

The death record 1874 is definately my Alexander's - just that most of the information on it is completely wrong. The most convincing evidence is that there are no other Alexander Middleton's of the right age in the area but him.

I have also made some steps as to identifying his parents. The death record gives them as George Middleton and Christian Scott. Now - (bear with me) there was a Helen Middleton born in Fraserburgh in 1791 whose father was George. The record says he lived at Kinglasser. Kinglasser is right beside the cottages of Philorth where my Alexander set up his workshop and lived most of his life. In addition to this, one George Middleton married a Mary Scott in the Parish of Rathen in 1786. The village of Rathen is less than two miles away from Kinglasser, and the Parish boundary probably less than one mile from Kinglasser.

Thus, probability would suggest that I have cracked it. It does, however, take a worryingly high number of possibilities and probabilities to reach the conclusion.

So we were possibly correct from the outset... the deceased's son must have been quite drunk when registering the death. Tongue

A side branch of my Burnett tree links by marriage of William Middleton(b.1820) to Margaret Burnett(b.1810) to 12 other Fraserburgh Middletons over 5 generations.  (another a  Scott, but not your names.) Some blacksmiths included.
I shall leave an 8 page printout of all the details I have on this branch at the Fraserburgh Heritage Centre front desk on Monday 20 July 09. for you to collect sometime.I see you are in Fraserburgh. I too want to get that branch completed up to present.

Ah excellent. I will be sure to pick that up to see if we connect anywhere. It does sound promising. Just a pity that my lots informants aren't that reliable.

By the way, if it helps my Mary Burnett (wife of Alexander Middleton) was the daughter of Alexander Burnett and Isabel Stewart. They Alexander and Isabel married at Pitsligo in 1793.

It's been interesting to read all these message exchanges as I have Elspet Middleton (the daughter of Alexander Middleton and Mary Burnett) in my tree. Aside from confirming that the names of the parents are right according to all of Elspet's registers, I can add the following info about Elspet:

Born abt 1827 (no record available).
Married Alexander McLennan (his 3rd wife) 20 MAY 1873 in Pilorth.
Died 3 FEB 1914 in Rubislaw, Aberdeenshire.

The child Mary Henderson Fraser that appears in the 1861 and 71 censuses is Elspet's illegitimate daughter. She was born 20 JUL 1860. The record names her as Mary Henderson Middleton, without any reference to a Fraser.
