Any way to find 'cause of death'
« on: Wednesday 04 June 08 14:39 BST (UK) »

Does anyone know if thre is any way to find out what a person died from without sending for a death certificate?

Thing is I have all the death details, including burial place, but no cause of death. I was wondering if a death would be registered in the obituary of a Leeds paper, if so does anyone know which Leeds newspaper would be printed in 1918?

Thanks

Death certificate is the best; occasionally it is mentioned in an announcement and I have sometimes seen it on a headstone; usually something like "drowned at sea".

Not all deaths/funerals are in the newspapers!

Just seemed a shame to have to send for a death certificate when i have all the information I need..if there was another way.

Have just found out that a relative was buried the day after her husband, he was 68 and she was 49..just curious to know what they died of.

2 deaths so close together could mean something like an accident or fire; might be an idea to check the local newspapers to see if anything was reported.

1918.......could have been influenza epidemic.

The main library in Leeds should be able to advise on what papers were around in their area.

The burial register sometime gives the cause of death.

Have you had a look on this site to see if anyone else has got the certificate. I put the details of mine on it whenever I get a new one. The more people that use it, the more chance there will be details from a certificate that you need.  Cheesy

If the deceased "merited" an obit in the newspaper it could say cause of death- in my grandfather's case the Bradford paper gave quite a bit of info....he fell ill with bronchitis which turned to pneumonia etc...

If you know the date of death and think there might have been an obit why not ask for SKS to do a lookup.  Worth a try and saves buying a a cert which most of us have to ration according to priority .
