Thanks very much everyone for replying to my query, really grateful. James is my maternal gggrandfather, I have found him on the census records for 1871 living in Bristol, 1881, 1891, 1901 (living in Bedminster Bristol), all the census records state he was born in Kingston upon Thames and was born c1852, also have his marriage certificate dated August 1870 which states him as being of full age, his father's name is Walter Millard a Painter. I can find no tie in on the 1861 census record for James Millard living with Walter Millard - Painter James marriage certificate does not tie in with his death certificate which state's he died in Bristol November 1913 aged 61 - again suggesting he was born in 1852. He married Jane Hucker in Bristol and had two daughters my ggrandmother Alice Millard b1870 (Yes a shotgun wedding) they are living with Jane's parents in Bridgwater on the 1871, and a sister Ada b 1881 in Bristol. The reason I was asking if anyone had any information for a birth in 1857 I think he might have been adopted and a new certificate issued ? I have sent for various certificates around the 1852 date but have come up with nothing. Have been trying to trace James & Walter Millard for over 3 years but have had no joy I'm afraid. Hope all that makes sense Frustrated Ann :

Yes I agree with you about marriage certificate, that's why I am dubious about his age! I have hunted everywhere to try and find him, I wouldn't be surprised if he is illegitimate and on the 1861 census records is under another name. I can't think of any other source of finding information. There is something very odd about this family line, his daughter Ada had six children, she put 4 of them into an orphanage, they were told their parents were dead, when she finally died her husband traced one of the daughters and got her to come and look after him, but did not bother with the others. Regards Ann

Hmmm. Please excuse me if this is a red herring!
Trying to trace the R and Mary I found in 1881 back on census, I'm wondering if this is them in 1861: RG9/1775 57 8 Stroud, Gloucestershire Walter Cleaver, head, 40, Painter, b. Gloucestershire Tedbury Mary, wife, 30, b. Berkshire James, son, 8, scholar, b. Surrey Kingston George, son, 6, scholar, b. do. Rebecca, dau, 4, scholar, b. do. Walter, son, 2, scholar, b. do.
The more I look at them the more I like them! The first names and rough birth years all match the various Millards found on later census in Gloucestershire under the name Millard, and there's a 'father' Walter who's a painter!
Who are the marriage witnesses?

Do you like my theory Anna, or is it too far fetched? Love it! Can't find a Cleaver-Millard marriage, though

In 1851 Walter Cleaver, 37, painter b Hungerford, is married to a 20 yr old Ann b London and lodging in Kingston-upon-Thames: HO107/1603/278/44
Mary Millard in 1881 gives her birthplace as Little Hungerford and Mary Cleaver in 1861 (b Berkshire) is the right age to be this Ann - wonder if the birthplaces have been mixed up somewhere (and, of course, her name - hmm.....)
