NSW 1909
« on: Wednesday 04 June 08 19:41 BST (UK) »

My great aunt left the UK in 1909 and during the early years lived in the following places - Narrandera, Deniliquin and Urana.  I'd love to know more about what these places were like at that time, can anyone help?

Thanks Jenn for the suggestion. I have followed your link and found it interesting but most of the info is for the mid to late 19th century.

Are there  pictures/postcards/photos  of these places as they were between 1900 and the first World War?

Hi linda

you probably need to find the family history associations or similar for these places
This link
http://users.tpg.com.au/hayhist/HistSocs.htm
covers Narrandera and Deniliquin (may be snail mail information only)

urana seems not too far away (from google maps) but I don't find alot about it - there is a shire web site - they may have some information

In 1909 they were pretty remote from say Sydney and if I remember my geography correctly they were wheat growing and cattle areas- quite prosperous for those who had large holdings. Dirt roads, towns with a main street, a couple of pubs, general stores- and of course the railway that was the lifeline.

Why not google the name of each of the towns plus "library" and see if you can get the local library to email you some photos of the towns in 1909.

I would also suggest you contact the Deniliquin Genealogy Society -
http://members.bordernet.com.au/~denifhg/

and the Ask a Librarian service at
http://www.deniliquin.nsw.gov.au/library.html

Good luck.
