Daniel Smith
« on: Thursday 20 January 05 18:24 GMT (UK) »

I am desperately seeking a Daniel Smiths marriage to a ( Sarah? )Silvester in Gloucs probably Cheltenham.

Their daughter Sarah Silvester Smith was married in Devon in 1872 in Crediton and gave her fathers name as Daniel Smith(Hawker)  and a Sarah Smith was a witness(possibly her mother?)Sarah was only 16 and three quarters so I guess her mother had to be there.

I have checked the 1871 Devon census and she isnt on it with her parents.

Can anyone help me on this brickwall?

Many thanks

Debbi

Hiya debbie2k

Just a couple of questions

Was the family living in Crediton at the time of the 1871 census? the only Daniel that is coming up when I search has a wife called Mary also have you found Sarah in any other census and what was her husbands name?

Let me know and I will have a look for you

Sarah Married Thomas Stephens Emery in 1872 in Crediton.

I have no census until after her marriage to Thomas.I couldnt find her or her parents in Crediton in 1871 anywhere.Looked in Dean Street from top to bottom incase she was a servant in a nearby house. Grin

I was only guessing her mothers name is Sarah I have no proof.

She only had 2 children Daniel and Thomas.

I have her from 1881 onwards as a married woman.

Many thanks

I have had a look Debbie but there just seems to be too many variables.

The best course of action might to be find someone who has the 1851/61 census for Gloucestershire and trace Daniel and Sarah from their early marriage

The other thing would be to order their marriage certificate and find out their ages when they married - at least that way you would be able to search within a certain range on the census. If you can find this out I will look further for you

Sorry I cant help you further at the moment

hI Willow,

To order the marriage cert I first need to be sure Daniels wifes name was Sarah.
To do that I need to find Sarah Silvester Smith with her parents.
I will however follow up the Gloucs 1851/61 lead and post accordingly.

Many many thanks for your assistance

Your welcome

There is a good chance that it is the right certificate. Several of my ancestors have their mothers maiden name as their middle name. If you live in Cheltenham it might be worth your time having a look through the parish registers to make sure its the right one

If you need any more help just shout

Hi Debbi

Here is a Daniel SMITH, hawker, in 1881 (you may already have this) but I can't find a match in 1871?

1881 census

North Street, Wareham St Martin, Dorset

Dan SMITH visitor married 63? hawker b.Basingstoke Hampshire
Sarah SMITH visitor married 47 hawker b.Exeter Devon

Living with a Joseph MILLER and family:

Joseph MILLER head mar 44 general dealer b.Weymouth
Jane wife 46 b.Weymouth
& children all b.Weymouth

Other visitors:

Richard HOOD unm 40 gardener b.Woobridge Dorset
Charles HOSNELL? wid 67 hawker b.London

Rg11/2100 folio 52 page 21

Were your family travelling hawkers would you think?  Ever any mention of "Gypsy" ancestry in the family?

Hiya,

I hadnt looked at 1881, why, I have no idea, I got bogged down in 1871 I think. They may have been in Crediton and moved on leaving her behind with her beau?

thank you for that it is looking promising as on the marriage cert for Daniels daughter his occupation is given as licensed hawker! Grin

Now to go backwards................

Many thanks
