Hi Judith

Not at all!! And Ancestry, bless,  can be very ....challenging ....sometimes ! Some of the transcriptions are hilariously off the mark.

I didn't even know one could get passenger list records like that off the CAN ARCHIVES! Thanks jorose

But the english FindMyPast website is relatively new so that's an extra tool now.Hopefully you may now be able to see Richard leaving the UK.  t was common for the man to go ahead. He did say immigrated 1904 on the Census (but Annie said 1905, which it very nearly was when she and the girls arrived).

With Ancestry, sometimes, less is more - I make good use of wildcards and often pick on kids to search for in a house if I can, as they are less likely to have 'mistaken" how old they are  Tongue  Grin

Cheers

I don't think Ancestry even has the lists leaving the UK.  Especially for Canada, there are many resources that are absolutely NOT covered by Ancestry. The ones entering Canada are images only on the Canadian archives site, so you have to cheat:

1) Find the people on the index on findmypast. You get year, port they left from, and port they arrived at.
2) Enter this year, and the two ports, on the Canadian site. You get a long list of ships.
3) Put the ship names into the findmypast search engine in turn, until you work out which ship they were on.
4) Search the lists for that ship for that year - there should now hopefully only be a few to work through.

The link for the ship lists:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/passenger/001045-100.01-e.php

Now, yet another question for you: do you have only the attestation papers for Richard for his war service? (i.e., the two pages that you can view online at the Canadian archives). You can order the full service record from the Canadian archives. I don't know that it would have any more detail about his English family, but there might be some interesting tidbits there.

Hi,

I am still back in kindergarten trying to find George and Sarah Turner in the 1871 census.  Ambly, you kindly supplied the reference numbers to use, but Ancestry does not give me a place to enter those.  So I am looking Worcestershire, Oldbury.  The parish of Oldbury is not listed in the 1871.  I did find it in the 1892 and 1881.  So I am mystified.  Are there other online sources for the english census ?  The UK Archives directed me to Ancestry.
Best, blockislandjudith

Re Ambly's hypothesis about my ancestor Richard Jackson
Summary
Sarah Jackson is a born Jackson
Her son is Richard Jackson
She also has a brother Richard Jackson

I found the following
1861 census Sarah Jackson b 1844, West Bromwich, Staffordshire
Mother: Sarah
Father: William
Brother Richard (4 years older)

Interestingly, West Bromwich seems to be very near Wednesbury, where George Turner was born.

Later, I find Richard Jackson, the brother of Sarah as a widower in 1891 with 4 children and 1 grandchild in West Bromwich.  This is the 1891 census where he also appears (if he is the same person) in the home of Samuel and Sarah Brooks, Oldberry, Worcs.  His age is correct and he is listed as a Coal Miner in both places.  The child in Oldberry (Sarah Jackson) is age 7 while the grandchild in West Bromwich is only 18 mos.  So maybe not the same person.    Wondered if anyone following this had seen this.  Thanks.
