Immigration to Adelaide
« on: Friday 06 June 08 12:31 BST (UK) »

Now I have a plausible passage for George  Whateley Hol;mes from Adelaide to Sydney in 1868, before he eventually settled in Armidale, I am now looking for a crossing England-Adelaide 1861-1868

A quick scan through website hhas had no joy, any suggestions?

This is a general guide to what sources exist:
http://www.text.archives.sa.gov.au/readingroom/advice/plistsin.html

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,62734.75.html - it seems from here that someone has looked in SA records for you and couldn't find anything.

It would help to know George's approximate age when he immigrated. He may have come into a port other than Adelaide - i.e. there are some G. Holmes and Geo. Holmes etc coming into Victoria around the 1861-1868 period, and some just listed as Mr Holmes.

Hi

He was born 1843, and is still in England in 1861

In 1868 he went from Adelaide to Sydney, so it must be between those dates

Have found a George Holmes on SA State records search that arrived in Adelaide from Plymouth, England on 1st January 1867 aboard the ship "Canterbury"
It sounds a possible but this record is an index only and without looking at the actual passenger list I can't tell you anything more than this.
I can have a look for you next time I'm at the archives if you would like....just let me know.
Cheers

No probs
What county in England would he have been living in at the time of his departure?
Do you know if he came out with any other family members?
What was his occupation?
I'm thinking of going to the archives tomorrow so will have a look for you then.

HI

He was from Birmingham (Warwickshire)

He travelled alone, - eventually settled in Armidale NSW
His much younger brother later joined him, but I have that ship pinned doewn hopefully.

He was a saddler, and full name if given is George Whateley Holmes
B 1843

Thanks Again

Hi Bob
Good news...found your guy.

George (Geo) Holmes, aged 23, Occupation: saddler, County of Origin: Warwick.

Another piece fitted to the puzzle. Enjoy!
