I have a Sarah Saunders that was married to a William Giles (marriage at Cricklade, wilts, 08/11/1837) but that is all the information I have for her. William later married an Elizabeth Brownett - I have info on her, but I just don't know about Sarah - I don't even have any dates for her. I believe she is either from Glos or Wilts. Can anyone help me? William was born in 1812 (somewhere!) and his father was born in Cricklade.

Hi Miranda,
I note by 1841 Elizabeth BROWNETT is residing with William who is now aged 30 born in the county
You mention William Giles father was born in Cricklade. Do you know his name. There is this Cricklade Baptism
William GILES bap 11 Sep 1812 Cricklade parents John and Sarah

Miranda here is the marriage entry
William GILES (Father John) = Sarah SAWNDEN (Father William) 8 Nov 1837 Cricklade. (Transcript Only - GRO Index lists SAUNDERS)
so the baptism for William looks good
John GILES = Sarah EACUTT 11 Nov 1811 Cricklade
Cheers Kris

William Giles does not appear to have married Elizabeth Brownett until Jun 1/4 1865 in Cheltenham 6a 729.
In 1851 she is described as his housekeeper, children listed as his children under the name Giles - 1861 she is living next door to William who lists as widowed. Elizabeth Brownett is described as unmarried and deaf. All Children are listed as Brownett. 1871 She is Elizabeth Giles Widow at son Williams home, children now Giles. Looks like William died Cricklade Jun 1/4 1866 5a 21 aged 54 years
baptisms Cricklade

Kris you are a star! the information you have given me is very exciting, I have been looking for this for ages! So if she is listed as Sawnden for her marriage but the GRO index lists her as Saunders - which is right? I need to get hold of the marriage cert for my records so I need the GRO ref. Someone on the chat, gave me p8 Folio 503. Is this the ref. I need to get the cert? thank you again.

Hi Miranda,
Glad to have helped. The reference you require is Dec 1/4 1837 Cricklade and Wooton Bassett Vol 8 Page 503. You can order your certificate from
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
I do expect her name is Saunders but without more information on her we really have little to go on. There are a couple of Sarah Saunders in Wiltshire with father William. (none in Cricklade) Alas a common name so without knowing how old she was or where she was born we are really up against it I am afraid. I do hope there may be witnesses to help on the marriage cert. I tried to find a likely death but I have been through the images from marriage in 1837 to 1841 and there are none listed in Cricklade. I had hoped the death cert may have at least given an age. Either she died elsewhere or I have to wonder since William and Elizabeth did not wed for another 25 years perhaps she may not have died. Interesting that they waited so long to marry.
Good Luck...............Kris

Hi again, it is an interesting one, because I have been told - I need to follow it up - that Elizabeth Brownett had an illigitimate child, she fell pregnant again & couldn't bear the thought so tried to drown herself, William Giles saved her & made her his housekeeper - & the rest is history as they say. I need to contact the person that told me that to find out where they discovered it! Great to have a bit of romance & scandal all at once. Perhaps there is a newspaper that has the story in it. Wouldn't have a clue where to look for that though - do you? regards
