1851 census Anderson
« on: Friday 06 June 08 15:56 BST (UK) »

Could someone please do a look-up for me in the 1851 census for a George Anderson, born 1823. Later censuses give birth place as Oare or Faversham.
Thank you

Hi Eric, which one is he in 1861, could you post the ref. details, and if not married do you know his parents' names?  I can see 2, one born Faversham and a stoker on board the vessel 'Cumberland', one b. Oare with wife Annie

Hi Barbara
Thanks for the reply. Now I'm having to think !!!!!!
I thought George was the one with wife Annie in 1861 : RG09  531  77  11  where he gives his birthplace as Oare. The other one didn't come up on my search on "Findmypast" but having had another look??

I will have another critical look at what I have found tonight and come back to you. I am going back from an Edward James Anderson aged 33 in the 1901 census. It does look as though both Georges could have married Annie or Anne

Yes that's the one I found that threw a spanner in the works for Eric, but I must admit I didn't look further until he confirmed what else he knew

Quite possibly enumerated twice, good point  Smiley

That was the sequence of census details I had followed to arrive at "where was he in 1851" and who were his parents?. I had also seen the ref in the National Archives. The extract gives his date of birth as 12/7/1823 which lines up with his age in the censuses. It also says he "volounteered" 1/6/1854. I was about to buy the details from National Archives until the spanner fell into the works!!!! so I thought I would save myself £3.50 until I was more certain.
The double entry is a distinct possibility. Faversham and Oare are places right next to each other. As you say there is not an obvious candidate in the 1841 census and I don't have access to the 1851 through findmypast, but he is obviously not apparent there.

The only possible? marriage I could find in"freebmd" took place in Liverpool in Dec Qtr 1857. with a George Anderson and a possible wife in Annie Saunders

Thank you for your interest. If you have any other ideas I shall be pleased to see them.

Regards
Eric

I think you can discount that marriage - George ANDERSON married Jane RETTIE http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/marriages.html

It might be a good idea to get a birth certificate for one of the children if you can to get Anne's maiden name.

Thought you might be interested in the follow up to George Anderson.
I got the birth cert for his son Edward James b. 1867. This confirms his father was George Anderson, a stoker in the RN. and mother Anne Rank.
I also got his service record. This shows he joined the navy in 1843 which is why he is not on 1851 census but he was serving on  HMS  Cumberland in 1861. The documents are wonderfully detailed His birthplace in the service record is given as Faversham, but all the censuses show it as the nearby Oare.  The address on the 1861 census for George at home with Anne is the same as that on the birth cert, so you were right about the double entry in the 1861 census.

I also found his marriage to Anne, in March 1860, in Bridlington¬!!!!! Which poses some other questions!! Was it a holiday romance!!!??? I think not.

If he was born in Oare in 1823 would he have been baptised there or in Faversham?

Thanks for your interest.
