Aylesbury Goal
« on: Friday 06 June 08 17:05 BST (UK) »

A Henry Bowles (a 2nd cousin twice removed) Born in Gt Marlow, place of residence Gt Marlow, occupation Skewer Maker, was received into Aylesbury Goal on the 31st December 1877, his age is given as 12. His crime Stealing Peas, the sentence 7 days + 12 strokes with brick rod. Has anyone any idea what a Brick Rod was. I have tried Google, also Wikipedia without any luck.

Are you sure it wasn't a 'birch' rod?

Birching was a standard punishment. The Isle of Mann in particular kept the punishment up until 1975.

Hi Valda, It had Brick Rod in the website Victorian Prisoners in Buckinghamshire, I have just checked and it does state Brick Rod.
I am sure you are right though,  it has been mispelt, a typing error. Birch Rod seems the answer. Checking on the websites you sent, in one of them it mentions 12 strokes, possibly this was the usual punishment.
Thank you for the quick reply, and solution to my question.
Kind Regards,

Hi Valda, Regarding your latest message, it is most interesting to see that Henry had a friend, poor little S---s, possibly they stole out of necessity. My Bowles ancestors seemed a bad lot, two other Bowles were admitted to goal for stealing a waistcoat, at least these 2 were acquitted.
Thank you for the information, I will print it out and add it to my Bowles File.
Kind Regards,
