I am trying to find the birth of Thomas Henry Cross b1885 in Yorkshire. I have his father as Alfred Henry Cross on his wedding certificate. But I cannot them together on a census from 1891 to 1901. I cannot be more specific. Thankyou.

freebmd has the marriage for those grandparents:
Sep 1856 Horncastle 7a 755
CAMMACK James DAWSON Maria
in 1881 census RG11/4858 Folio 29 Page 8 they had two daughters, Maria and Matilda, who could have married Alfred Henry
But - the marriage I found in http://www.middlesbrough-indexes.co.uk/search.php was in 1881 for Maria to THOMAS CROSS, not Alfred
Matilda married Andrew Thompson in 1890
so this may not be the right family

I cannot be more specific.
Kenelm, if you have the certificate, if you give us the date of the marriage and where it took place, his address at time of marriage, his wife's name, and his father's occupation, and even perhaps witness names, it would all help
middlesbrough indexes has Thomas' birth, you could order it through the website, and then you would know both his parents' names, you can check with them first to be sure it's the right one

Many thanks everyone for your searches. Alfred Henry Cross is shown as a soldier on Thomas Henry Cross's marriage certificate. I apologise for the delay in replying. The birth date could be one year either side of the 1885 too.

Thomas Henry was married in Epsom in 1933 to Susan Wright [b Broxted,Essex]. Alfred Henry was deceased at the time of the marriage.

He was very old at marriage if he was born c1885. What is his age on the certificate? Why do you think he was born in Yorkshire?

Yes,he was aged 49 at time of marriage. I am trying to help a friend and she says they came from Yorkshire. So I thought it best to try Yorkshire.

Ah. Family rumours can be way out so I suspect you might need to make sure there aren't lots of other births that might be correct and widen your search. The Yorkshire bit might be another generation back. Who were the marriage witnesses? When did Thomas die? If he lived long enough that may give a birth date which might narrow it down. What were his children called?

The rest of my friends search data has proven accurate. Alfred Henry Cross was a soldier as per the marriage and alive on the marriage certificate of 1933-Epsom Surrey where Thomas Henry Aged 49 married Susan Wright aged 39 and again in Epsom,Surrey. Thomas Henry died in 1942 aged 57 again at Epsom. I have tried the East Riding site but not the West Riding site.

The marriage certificate of Thomas Henry Cross in 1933 at Epsom gives his father as Alfred Henry Cross [deceased] but also states that his father had been a soldier. Thomas Henry Cross had WJ Rowlands as a witness. The other witness was B. Wright for the bride[Susy Wright].
I have not searched Army Records.
