I'd really someone checking the BVRI for the wedding of
Hannah Carpenter and Herbert Syred, probably taking place in the mid-1830's.
Hannah was born in the Dorking/Great Bookham area and her daughter Caroline was baptized in Dorking 17/10/1838. Caroline's christening record reads: "Caroline Hannah d. Herbert/Hannah of Ranmore Common, soldier"
The Surrey MI does not have a record of a marriage of Herbert and Hannah.
I do have the '41 and subsequent census information. Interestingly, Caroline was raised by her maternal grandparents.
Herbert and Hannah seemingly left the country after the birth of the child as they do not appear in either the '41 or '51 censuses. Hannah reappears in '61 as a widow living with her father. Herbert reappears only on Caroline's marriage certificate. All very strange.
There's a chance they were married by an army chaplain in which case the record is somewhere in the military record system. that's my next step.
