Hi guys,
I have lost some of my relatives and was hoping someone may be able to help
I have the following family:
Johann Philipp Sommerlad (b. 1842 Ober-Rosbach, Hessen, Germany) who married: Elisabetha Stengel (b. 1845 Ober-Rosbach, Hessen, Germany)
They had 5 living children: Friederike Elisabethe Sommerlad (b. 1867) Wilhelmine Margarethe Sommerlad (b. 1870) Friedrich Sommerlad (b. 1874) Jakob Peter Sommerlad (b. 1877) Anna Elisabethe Sommerlad (b. 1880)
According to family letters they left Germany in 1880 for America, but I have been unable to find them there
Any help would be great as I can only check the 1880 census on familysearch and I think they must have been enroute at that time.
Thanks so much
Jenny

The 1900 Census is available for free here: http://labs.familysearch.org/
I think I may have found the mother & children on a passenger list. 21 Sept. 1881, from Hamburg, Germany and Le Havre, France to New York, Ship - Wieland
Elise Sommerlad, age 36, female, wife Frederike, age 8, female Minna, age 7, female Franz, age 6, male Jacob, age 11 months, male All listed as Hessian & intending to become inhabitants of the United States.
I think I might have found Friedrich & Jacob in Washington state.
WWI Draft Registration Cards
Fred Sommerlad E. 3527 Everett, Hillgard, Spokane, Washington 43 years old, born 24 Dec. 1874 White, declarant (for naturalization), citizen of Germany occupation - tankman for Gr. Nov. Ry. Co., Hillgard, Washington Nearest relative - daughter Catherine Sommerlad at same address
Jacob Sommerlad PO Box 484, Hillgard, Spokane, Washington age 41, born 10 Aug 1877 White, non-declarant, citizen of Germany Occupation - car repairer for Gr. Nov. Ry. Co., Hillgard, Washington Nearest relative - brother Fred, PO Box 484, Hillgard, Washington
1920 Census, Mead, Spokane, Washington I'm having trouble accessing the image at the moment, but Frederich was born abt. 1875 in Germany, was a widow, owned his own home, immigrated 1881. Jacob was born about 1878 in Germany, brother of Fred, single, immigrated 1881.
Washington Death Index entries
Fred Sommerlad, died 23 Jul 1941 in Spokane City, age 66 Jacob Sommerlad, died 20 Dec 1942 in Spokane City, age 65
Here's a possible match for Anna Elisabethe: Iowa State Census, 1 Jan 1925, Cooper, Webster Co. Eliza Brock, age 44, born in Germany, married, mother: Anna Stangel, father: Phillip Sommerlad, both parents born in Germany She's living with her husband Herman and children Hilda, Erma, Ellora, & Melvin.

Hello Shellyesq,
Thank you soooo much
That is them alright the birth dates for Fred and Jacob are a match to my German Church records! I wonder why the father Johann Philipp does not show up on the immigration records? Maybe he went first and they followed.
Well at least it appears they arrived and survived, I had a letter from their father, who after 10years never heard a word from them. If only they had had the communication systems we have now hey
I will have a look at the 1900 census and see if I can find them

Yeah I can't find them either Nick
Emil is a definate possibility though as it is a family name. Johann Philipp Sommerlad had a brother Friederich Emil Sommerlad who lived in Giesen. Maybe he named two of his boys after him?
Thanks for having a look they are proving to be difficult!
