Would SKP lookup 1861 census for;
William Smith age approx 33 born Liverpool Cabinet Maker
Wife could be Emma Smith.
Daughter Jane Smith age approx 8 born Birmingham.

I have that record, but dont think it`s them. It`s Williams` occupation that`s the stumbling block.
In 1871 when Jane married she gave occupation for her father as Cabinet Maker. I think he would have had to have served an apprenticeship. for this trade.
Jane even though married in Liverpool was born Birmingham.
She named her first daughter Emma.
Could William have been a policeman then cabinet maker.
Are family still together in 1871 ?

Victoria, am I right in thinking that you're trying to put together a marriage for Emma Nichols to William Smith, hoping that he's the father of your Jane? If so, I can't seem to find her in 1861 with her daughter Matilda Nichols aged 1 in 1851 census (from your other thread) - if she married William in 1851 March Quarter they ought to be together on 1851 census. There are 10 names on the same page for the March Qu 1851
It may be better to try to find Jane's birth certificate, to find out both her parents' names, and find more out about William that way, get that marriage cert and find his age, if he was a cabinet maker he's not showing up as that in 1861 census, with or without an Emma. How do you know he was born in Liverpool, and his age?
There is a Jane right age in Birmingham with father William (not b. Liverpool)but mother Charlotte, and he's a labourer. Not enough information to find them I'm afraid
Were there any witness names on Jane's marriage cert that might help? Relatives perhaps?

Hi Barbara,
I have been trying for many years to get a birth certificate for Jane Smith born Birmingham Father William Smith cabinet Maker.
I sent off for copy of birth record but none were found.
There was an Emma Smith at her marriage 1871 Liverpool.
Dont know how she was related.
The only link was that she may have a been her stepmother.
I found this record.

Emma is age 54 Widow with children
Christopher 19 Alfred 14 Caroline 12
Have found all records of possibilities but without birth certificate I am at a dead end.
My only clue was Emma at her wedding.

Emma Nicholls marriage March Qu 1851 is Solihull have just looked at the image, so she didn't marry William Smith, she possibly married William White who is also Solihull, but listed on the same page as the Birmingham marriages

I would send off for marriage certificate for William and Emma Houghton but that would not tell me much only if William was widower.
It would give you his age and occupation, to be sure you have the right father for Jane. It's so easy to get off track when you don't have the certificates. You can always check with the registrar for known details before buying so that you don't get the wrong one, especially with a surname like Smith. It should also give you his father's name and occupation so that you could find his birth and find him in earlier census.

You can always do the same for Jane's birth cert, the registrar should be able to check her father's name and occupation before you buy, or if you want to do it through the GRO, they charge for reference checking.
