AVG Free V8
« on: Sunday 08 June 08 12:05 BST (UK) »

Is anyone else who uses the new AVG Free version 8 having the same problem I am?

Even since I downloaded the new version I often get DNS - Server cannot be found. I even got it on a couple of ocassion when trying to get onto Rootschat.

It's most frustrating and I am getting fed up with it.

Thanks for the link aghadowey. Just been to take a look but doesn't mention the DNS Error. Did have points I have already found but have gone along with thinking it had been the times I was online.

Perhaps it only with dial-up computers.

Perhaps one of the Mods can merge this with the other link or should I lock t rather than have two links on the same subject.

Should have looked first before posting - sorry

My computer completely crashed after I downloaded this latest AVG version 8.0 upgrade! $150 later, I had it removed and my computer was restored by a computer technician, and another virus checker was installed, and my computer is fine again.

The technician's comments - "nothing free is ever free"!!!!!

Like they say nothing is free.
I got a copy of Family Tree Maker form a newspaper. I already had an older version.
I installed it and regretted it. I couldnt export any files from this free version, couldnt do this couldnt do that
I had to eventually uninstall it and reinstall my older version.

If it's not broke dont fix it!

Unfortunately AVG were the ones who upgraded their virus check progamme from AVG7 to AVG8. There are no more updates for AVG7 so it was upgrade or lose the checking.

Never had any problems with previous programmes. Been using AVG for years and this is the first time I have had problems but I think it's been geared up for broadband and is much slower for dial ups.

AVG8 free  on dial up is the ultimate nightmare...  previous free version took abt  2 mins to downlaod the update and install.    version 8 takes 35 mins to do the same thing!

What on earth can they be doing... is it just bad software design or is it, more cynically, to force us all to buy something ?

I've had them up to the neck... to put it very politely. And they were so very good.  What a disappointment.

Could be worth thinking about installing broadband. It's much cheaper these days.

I have mentioned this on another thread but I have installed the Zonalarm security suite, its the complete package anti virus firewall spyware blocker etc etc
its free for  year when you buy a couple of their products online, things like ink etc.
you only need this and nothing else to safeguard your PC

Don't pretend to know a lot about this...but know what I like..

At the mo... have Eset Smart Security.  Also Superantispyware and just downloaded free 'Threatfire', it all seems very easy on my system. Although I did pay for the first two.  I like the security suites, and all are compatible.

Have tried Kaspersky (ok)

Also Mcfee (ok but, slowed the comp down)

Had adaware professional, alongside above, for a few years and really liked it, but did not want to pay for the 2008 version, but had to change as there was no more updated from April.

Have used Avg in the past, it was ok for a while, but had a problem it could not remove, so changed...hope you all get joy, or sort it out.

I have heard that Avast have a free antivirus download, but don't know how it is reviewed...If your not happy...check out the review sites, what's free, what's not.  Nothing worse than software giving you a headache, life's short enough.

Just a few thoughts, hope it helps

Woody,  for various reasons installing broadband isn't possible.  And that misses the point-which is that AVG8.0 takes 10 times as long to download/install updates as the previous version on the same pc, same connection etc.

Just a comment on AVG 8 free version.  I had no end of trouble trying to install and run AVG 8 on four computers, having had no problems for ages with AVG 7.  Eventually, I gave up (after much drama) ans trashed it and installed Avast free version.  Install easy, works without disrupting the system, unlike AVG which hogs large chunks of processor capacity.
I have broadband, but I would suggest that Avast would be far better for a dial up connection, although the initial download of 21 mb may take a while.

mcmp

ps AVG have extended update support for AVG 7 Free version till end of 2008

I've been using AVG for years, never had a problem including the new version 8.... runs perfectly.   Prefer AVG  over any other AV programme free or otherwise.

Cheers

You made the best choice !    Smiley

Eset is the best one - it's written in machine-code, which means that it places the lightest of loads on your computer's processor, which means that it won't slow the PC down.  In tests, Eset NOD32 was found to be nearly three times faster than AVG.

I currently use Kaspersky, which is pretty good, but when the subscription is up on it, I will be switching to Eset.
