Evans - Bersham
« on: Sunday 08 June 08 20:09 BST (UK) »

Hi, my gr gr grandmother was called Jane Evans - her father was Richard shown on her marriage certificate in 1865 - shows his profession as well sinker.
She was 21 on marriage certificate and married Thomas McGee in England - however she was from LLangollen area - born around 1844/5. I think i may have found her on 1851 census living at Bersham Hamlet - but not sure.
Any help fully appreciated.

hello

On their marriage certif does it say where they got married.( As that may give a clue to 1861 census, or do you have it  - then we can backtrack) Was her dad alive or dead when they married? How old was Thomas?

I've had a quick look but cant find her. But I will look again.

from Jane

ps where is Bersham Hamlet?

Bersham is about 2 miles outside Wrexham and was a paper making place at the time when Jane lived there.  The Jane I found in 1851 was born in Wrexham, not Llangollen.  Any other info on her and Richard would be helpful.

Hi

On their marriage certif does it say where they got married.( As that may give a clue to 1861 census, or do you have it - then we can backtrack) Was her dad alive or dead when they married? How old was Thomas?

She married Thomas Mcgee in Derby 21/10/1865 - and her father Richard Evans was shown as being alive with profession of well sinker. She was 21 and Thomas 32.

1881 census Jane was shown living in Derby as a widow with her children. This is the census that states born LLangollen, Wales.
1871 census she is shown living with Thomas in Derby

I have not found her on any earlier census 's - As I said I think she appears on 1851 census living at Bersham Hamlet with her father Richard.

To Mike Davies - Is the Jane you found in the 1851 census the one showing her living at Bersham Hamlet??
Therefore I am stuck - I know she was definately born in Wales in the North around LLangollen area, her father was called Richard.

Just found Jane Evans on 1861 census -  - found a Jane Evans - showing same profession Silk Winder as I have on later census. looks like lodging with a relative in Manchester - looks like poss Ann E - a sister or cousin married a Henry Woolford. Ann E shown as from Llangollen too and on same census again Jane is shown as age 19??? but also from Llangollen. From marriage certificatewhere shown as age 21 presume birth around 1844/5 but if wrong age on marriage certificate as 19 on the 1861 census could be 1842.

Henry Woolford married an Ann Elizabeth Evans in Lancashire in the January quarter of 1851.I haven't located the couple in the 1851 Census,which may be not surprising as there are parts that are unreadable!I have found the following Family in the 1841 Census in Trefor Ucha Llangollen;
Richard C Evans,aged 45.
Elizabeth Evans,aged 40.
Lydia Evans,aged 12.
Sarah Evans,aged 10.
Ann Evans,aged 6.
Harriett Evans,aged 4.
Mary Evans,aged 2.
All the family are given as born in Denbighshire.HO107/1400/Book 17,Folio 24 Page4.
One other thing I found was all the childrens baptisms apart from Mary at the Llangollen Glanrafon Congregational Chapel,on the Blackwell Index CD of Non Conformist Baptisms produced by Clwyd FHS.It staes that the Elizabeth the Mother's maiden name was Roberts.Again you will also find these Baptisms on the IGI.

The IGI's list of extracted Marriages for Llangollen lists a Marriage of a Richard Evans and an Elizabeth Roberts to have taken place on the 24th of September 1831.As this does not quiite tally with the Birth of the eldest child Lydia from 1841,I will check out the Marriage in the Llangollen Parish Registers at the Rhosymedre Resource Centre of Clwyd FHS tomorrow.

Hi

The 1841 record that William has found lists Richard as an agricultural labourer. It's possible that he moved to England and became a well sinker by the time of Jane's marriage but  Undecided

Did you find anything in the Llangollen Parish Registers at the Rhosmedre Resource Centre of the Clwyd FHS, W.R.? It's not worth me looking if you've already checked.
