Hi All,
I am looking for ELIHU REYNOLDS born c. 1847 in Wednesbury, Staffs. on the 1881 Census Return.
He is on the 1851 as ELISHA with his parents, William and Sarah.
He is also on the 1861 as ELIHA, again with his parents.
He married in 1868 Lydia Ann Hunt.
He is on the 1871 with his wife (now altered to Ann Lydia) and his occupation was a machinist.
Then he goes missing when the 1881 is taken.
His wife is on the 1881 down as Lydia A Reynolds. Married. with their children.
Then in 1891 Elihu reappears, married. Occupation Fitter, and he only has a boarder with him Susannah West, Housekeeper.
Also in 1891 Lydia A Reynolds is there but down as a Widow. (Cannot find a death for Elihu at this time)
Then in 1901 Elihu is there as Married with wife Susannah!!!! and daughter Beatrice.
Also in 1901 Lydia is there with her daughter and son-in-law. She is down simply as Lydia Reynolds Mother in Law
The daughter, Beatrice born 1891 whose birth certificate I have got, gives her mother a Susannah PARRY (I thought it may have been WEST, thinking Elihu may have gotten together with his housekeeper:)
I have the Marriage certificate for Elihu and Lydia Ann Hunt, but cannot find a trace of his second marriage (if ever there was one)
Can you throw any light on this as to where Elihu Reynolds was hanging out in 1881.
He seems to have led a 'double life', and split from his wife, who thought it more right and proper to put herself as Widowed rather than saying her husband had left her.
What are your thoughts on this??? I think divorce was not an easy option in those days!!!
Many thanks
Gillianr

Hi Gillian
You have posted on the Staffordshire board - what you didn't include was that he wasn't living in Staffordshire in 1871 - he was in Birmingham Warwickshire and both his children at that time were born there as was his wife
I will ask the moderator to move it to the Warwickshire board to avoid any confusion
Have you found Susannah West on the 1881 in case he was with her (you haven't given any details of her birthyear/place)

Hi Carole Sorry for posting on the wrong board, and thanks for arranging to get it moved.
Yes, I have looked for Susannah West on the 1881, thinking like you did, that Elihu may have been with her, but no luck. Susannah was born in Birmingham, and born about 1852. I am afraid I have no more info on Susannah West.
Lydia is still living in 1901 and as yet, cannot find a death for her.
We so need the 1911 Census made available:(
It is possible that Susannah and Elihu left their respective spouses, and set up home together.
I have just had a thought:)
I will have to search this myself though.
The thought is: Was Suannah West previously known as Susannah PARRY this being her maiden name, which is the name on Beatrice's birth Certificate, and also, the ages fit, apart from a 2 year difference, which is not unusual.
Susannah West in 1891 was 39 yrs old and in 1901 she was 47 yrs old, if it IS Susannah WEST/PARRY.
Elihu died in 1915 aged 68 yrs, have just sent for death cert to see who registered the death.
I will try and trace Susannah and Thomas back from 1881 with the info you have given me.
No doubt we shall be in touch again.
Many thanks Gillianr

Hi
When I was checking for her in 1881 - I used her 1901 age so searched a year either side of 1854

Hi Carole
Looks like my hunch has paid off:)
I have found the marriage of Thomas West, to Susannah PERRY in 1875, so it does look like she reverted back to her maiden name when she had her daughter Beatrice, although it looks like PARRY on the cert.
I looked at the 1881 Census for Thomas and Susannah, and then I checked the 1891 where I found Thomas (same occupation) but his wife's name on that is Annie, so it looks like they have all found other partners:)
I have not yet looked for the 5 year old daughter
Hey, how have you just got the message in about the marriage while I was typing this. Your message was not there when I started:)
So, you beat me to it then.
BUT, still need to find Elihu on the 1881:)
Many thanks and Bye for now Gillianr
