In 1871 Emma was working as a servant (housemaid)  in Markington with Wallerthwaite ..

Thanks for that - still not found his parents but Thomas looks right as William & Nancy's first born was called Tom which follows the tradition.
Will try looking under Walls - may get somewhere further! Got my scottish side back to 1700 but English is proving abit harder!

Couldn't find them on LDS either - which is why I was tearing my hair out! Found them on census on my free ancestry link that someone kindly sent me.

There is this Christening in West Tanfield .. but I'm assuming this is where you found your initial information ..

In 1851 there is this couple .. Thomas and Ann Wells, living in West Tanfield .. the naming pattern also looks quite good to me .. plus their children were born in Nosterfield .. !  Smiley

Just as guidance .. in 1851 Thomas claimed his birthplace to be North Lees .. which is situated in the Ripon area ..
