Hi eeyores4me, Are the family definitely from Russia? Reason I ask is that it seems that Lancer is a Jewish name from Poland: http://www.jewishgenealogy.com.ar/lublin/ancestors_l.html I've just found some information about a Lancer family - father's name Wolf, and son named Hyman Abraham Lancer (death in 1924) - let me know if it's a possibility. Hi Annie, Not at all - I reckon you've come to the same conclusion as me. I thought it must be a Jewish name, and found the Polish names- then the same site as you - amazing one isn't it! I'm pretty sure it is the right family but we'll have to see what ee... says in the morning. Look forward to seeing what she has to say. Paulene There's another site (Jewish genealogy site, but you have to register, etc to get the information - has lots of great advice on it though: http://www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/FAQ.html Anyway, Annie, past my bed-time - get too absorbed! Take care

Civil vital registration in what became Russian Poland (the Kingdom of Poland, also known as Congress Poland) began in 1808 in the Duchy of Warsaw, and the records were kept in "Napoleonic format", a paragraph-essay style. For 1808-1825, Jewish registrations (and those of other religious denominations) were recorded in the Roman Catholic civil transcripts. Beginning in 1826, separate registers were kept for each religious community (Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, Russian Orthodox, Greek Orthodox, etc.) Records were recorded in the Polish language from 1808 until 1868, and were kept thereafter in the Russian language, until 1918, when Poland regained its independence.

Hi Annie, Thanks for those sites - fascinating, aren't they. I'd love to look into my son-in-laws tree (he's from Moscow, but roots elsewhere), but need to see how the family feel about it first. Something new to learn everyday, on RootsChat I think the marriage is a fair bet, Annie - but where is the first wife's death?!!! Paulene

Hi,
The "stranger" on the burial records; have you researched their name to see if there is a link?

Hi chaps,
I've read a bit about Russian research in the past. Thanks for those links, by the way as I'd missed those.
I've gathered that the only way to do research in Russia is to pay for someone to do it for you. Apart from the fact that I wouldn't trust some possibly dodgy researcher, I'd rather have the fun of doing my own. The small matter of the language .... well that may hinder.
Does anyone know if the LDS are in there doing their bit? Would they take someone to translate into English?
PS. Paulene - you can do mine if you want to (I give my permission )
