Gloucestershire RO - Copy Microfiche
« on: Monday 09 June 08 22:10 BST (UK) »

Does anyone know whether Gloucestershire Records Office still sell copy microfiche of the parish registers they hold please?  I can't seem to find anything about this on their website - and yes I could email them, but just wondered if anyone knew off hand.

About 6 or 7 years ago I purchased a couple of the microfiche of Upper Slaughter but I remember they were very expensive compared to other Records Offices, about £5 per fiche.  Just wondering if they still do and how much they are now as I've got back into looking at my Gloucestershire ancestry again recently.

Thanks

I spoke to the archivist, who informed me that there is a list of parishes whose incumbents have given their permission for the microfiches to be copied.

What you have to do is to write to or email the RO with the name of the parish you want, and they will check it against the list.  From what she said, you will have to have the whole fiche rather than a selected part of it, though I'm not sure whether that means the complete parish records, which usually appear on a series of fiches.

It would seem that the charge per fiche is lower than you previously paid, as a price of £2 or £3 was quoted.

Hope this helps.

Hi Gillg

Thanks for that.  I suspect they mean you have to purchase the whole of a specific individual register rather than all for the parish.  Essex and Northampton do this but from memory Suffolk often let you purchase just the specific fiche required.  I shall send them an email since the earliest I can get down there is going to be the Saturday opening in July and if I don't make that it won't be for some months unless they expand their Saturday opening (which I'm hoping will be done under the review).

Thanks for asking.

Thanks for that.  I think the price from the LMA is a little out of date, when I asked a couple of year's back I was quoted about £35-40 per film but I think it depends on whether the LDS did the original filming or the LMA itself.  Hopefully when they eventually get the parish registers online it will work out a lot cheaper...
